Association Brain Food: 10.7.22

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

boardwalk through a maritme forest – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityBecause I’m away next week on a hiking vacation in South Dakota, I’m not publishing Association Brain Food on Friday, October 14. This edition includes all the free events I could find for the next two weeks. I’ll be back with more on Friday, October 21.

Jargon-busting. Because words are my trade, I’m super aware of how people use them. I know I’m not the only one. Remember all the groans when someone said “unprecedented times” during the pandemic? WBT Systems explains why business jargon isn’t a joking matter, what effect it has on the people and associations who use it, and which terms are especially troublesome.

Workforce model decision. Many organizations are witnessing a disconnect between leaders and employees about whether to become or remain a remote, hybrid, or traditional workplace. Before deciding, Achurch Consulting suggests you discuss and agree upon organizational values together—executives, managers, and staff. They also identify the factors you should consider before choosing a workplace model.

AMS implementation workload. No one tells you about all the work your team must take on when implementing a new AMS—which is why this new guide from Ellipsis Partners is a godsend. They describe nine responsibilities you should be aware of and prepare for. It’s much better to get this news well before your project begins so you can figure out how to juggle these tasks with your regular workload.

Revisiting membership practices. Don’t assume the membership recruitment, engagement, and retention practices that worked pre-pandemic will continue to work as well now. Fionta suggests ways to improve membership marketing, attract younger members, look beyond membership, communicate value, and think about the future differently.

Instructor-led education. Adult learning principles need more attention in the association community. Too many associations deliver—and too many attendees settle for—mediocre, ineffective educational experiences. On the Event Garde blog, Tracy Koenig-Poches suggests you design instructor-led learning experiences with the millennial in mind, which will also satisfy the older learner too. She provides several instructional strategies to keep in mind when developing educational events and programs.

Year-round attendee community. Associations put a ton of effort into planning, promoting and hosting conferences, then do little to keep attendees connected as a community and to the association after the event is over. What a missed opportunity! Event Mobi explains how to build a year-round community and content hub for attendees.

The turd on the table. That’s much more descriptive than “the elephant in the room,” isn’t it? Rishad Tobaccowala says a “combination of hubris, incestuous thinking and improperly aligned incentives” causes organizations to be their own worst enemy, resulting in missed opportunities, mismanagement, and dysfunctional cultures. If only they called out the turd on the table. He describes the many varieties of turds, why we don’t address them, and how to cultivate a culture of turd-slayers.

Quick hits

Have you heard of MOLO—more of/less of? (Mary Byers, CAE)

The chief hype officer: the problem with the Chief Marketing Officer’s job description. (Seth Godin)

Open the U.S. skies! Why domestic air travel is limited to U.S. airlines and how we, the people, lose out on that deal. (Alex Tabarrok, Marginal Revolution)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free educational events if you prefer takeout. Due to leftovers and a Hurricane Ian-induced power outage, I don’t have much to share this week.

I defrosted two pounds of ground lamb and asked Jim if he had any requests. Lamb stroganoff! I adapted my recipe from Fine Cooking, which is no longer published, but found the same recipe on another site. However, I make this with two pounds of ground lamb instead of chicken. I go heavy on the mushrooms and sometimes add eggplant too. I increase the rest of the ingredients to match the increase in meat, mushrooms and eggplant. I use onion instead of shallot, add smoked paprika, cayenne and Worcestershire sauce, and omit the tomato, but I can see how that would be good. Serve over egg noodles, macaroni or pasta.

Italian broccoli salad is a great potluck dish. Mine was intended for a neighbor’s party that was postponed because of the power outage. I add salami to this dish and increase some of the other ingredients, like the olives, pepperoncini and provolone. Based on a suggestion in the comments, I make an oregano dressing from Smitten Kitchen instead of the one in the NYT recipe. We like heating up this salad too—sprinkle with parmesan if you do.
