The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

Free professional development resources and events for CAEs, association staff and others in the association community

Does your association need a stop-doing list? In Associations Now, Elena Gerstmann, FASAE, CAE, of the Avenue M Group explains how to set up a review process to help you figure out what to stop doing so you have time to do what’s really important.

During a conference, attendees take notes, exchange business cards and make lists of great ideas to explore. But what happens when they get back to the office? MemberSuite suggests how to turn a few days into long-lasting learning experiences for your attendees.

Instead of focusing on getting students and recent graduates to join your association, WBT Systems recommends earning their loyalty and trust by providing the education and resources they need to get a job.

What’s the difference between an AMS query and an AMS report? If you’re not quite sure, DelCor will set you straight and explain the best use for each one.

Billhighway identifies eight valid and understandable reasons why chapter members don’t volunteer and recommends several solutions for overcoming those obstacles.

Quick hits before we get to next week’s free webinars:

  • Watch out for this Amazon phishing scam hitting inboxes now. (Stu Sjouwerman, KnowBe4)
  • To build an inclusive culture, start by running inclusive meetings. (Kathryn Heath and Brenda F. Wensil, Harvard Business Review)
  • Gen Z-ers and millennials have been called lazy and entitled. Could they, instead, be among the first to understand the proper role of work in life? I think so, although many of us older folks always understood it, we just went along to get along. (Claire Cain Miller and Sanam Yar, New York Times)

Good eats this past week:

  • Looking for a quick dinner? Try this chimichurri chicken from the New York Times. If you aren’t a subscriber, use any recipe for chimichurri, slather it on chicken thighs, let them sit a bit and then bake. I used cilantro (in addition to parsley) instead of the recipe’s oregano. If you use this recipe, cut back on the olive oil, try 6 tablespoons.
  • In my quest to use zucchini in a recipe that would last a few meals, I made this zucchini mac and cheese with garlic brown butter breadcrumbs. I didn’t read the post but I think the blogger at Spices in My DNA was trying to hide the zucchini in the mac so her kids would eat it. No such issues here so I chopped the zucchini instead of grating it. I also added red onion and shishito peppers. You could definitely cut back on the cheese—that was a big pile of cheddar, gouda and fontina.
  • I’ve made this deviled bluefish from Saveur several times, maybe you’re tired of me talking about it.
  • Lately, I’ve turned to a simple sauce for fish, potatoes and green beans: melted butter infused with chopped chives (or garlic chives) and lemon juice. Quick and satisfying. Might do it again tonight with some speckled trout, but thinking about adding Aleppo pepper for some zing.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have any free webinars or events coming up, please send me the link. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not product-centric.
