Association innovation. Throughout March, Mary Byers, CAE, and the Loyalty Research Center are sharing stories about highly innovative organizations, their best practices, interviews with innovators, and challenge questions about innovation to ponder. Celebrating a new season. The spring equinox arrives on Saturday. WBT Systems suggests setting aside time to reflect back on a year of pandemic winter, do some spring cleaning, tend to the plants in your care, and fertilize your soil—four activities that will renew your association spirit.
Chapter events. Billhighway talked to Aaron Wolowiec, CAE, CMP, of Event Garde about his outlook for chapter events this year and what chapters should consider before deciding to return to in-person events.
Questions for leadership. Jeff De Cagna, FRSA, FASAE, of Foresight First, shares six questions for association decision-makers. Leaders should discuss these questions to avoid returning to “the emerging temptation of a false normalcy and [making] a hard turn back toward the pre-2020 complacency that exacerbated the pandemic’s detrimental impact.”
Mindfulness. Mindfulness is going mainstream because the science says it works, reports Tanya Basu at The Daily Beast. Mindfulness is not a cure-all. However, having a daily mindfulness habit helps you practice staying in the moment, recapturing your attention when it wanders, and taking time to think before reacting—like giving into the late-night ice cream urge. Bottom line… mindfulness can transform your life.
Self-care. This is one of the best articles about self-care I’ve read because it dismisses the usual tripe spewed out as advice. At First Round Review, Jessmina Archbold says self-care is not what you buy yourself, it’s how you work on yourself. She explains how to assess your needs, identify where you’re depleted, and find resources and solutions, including setting boundaries.

- One of my favorite flavor combos is lamb and eggplant, so this shepherd’s pie recipe in Bon Appétit caught my eye. I used ground lamb instead of shoulder so it didn’t take nearly as long to make—30 minutes simmering instead of 1-3/4 hours. Add the garlic when the onions are nearly done, not later, as instructed. I used 2% milk and pecorino romano cheese.
- On the side, what else, sautéed greens. This time the mix included kale, chard, red cabbage, bacon, onion, orange bell pepper, garlic, and dried cranberries.
- One of our fish nights featured striped bass given the Mummy Lorraine treatment—for those not in the know that’s baked fish fillets topped with a mix of crushed Ritz crackers, lemon zest, garlic salt, and melted butter. On the side, broccoli stems and carrots cooked in a small amount of butter/oil with herbes de Provence.
- The next night, we had Thai curry risotto with butternut squash and green beans. I used chicken, not vegetable broth. I added bite-sized chunks of baked almaco jack fillets to the risotto when it was done.
