Hundreds of investigators, educators, and clinicians are headed to Boston to learn, network, and discover how to make a difference for patients who are at risk for delirium or who develop it.

Following preconference programs on Sunday, ADS 2019 begins on Monday morning with a plenary featuring Dr. Dale Needham. The medical director of the Critical Care Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Program at Johns Hopkins Hospital will discuss the role physical rehabilitation has on delirium in patients in the ICU. Also on the agenda:

Discussion time. Following the poster viewing on Monday evening, ADS will hold small, moderated discussion groups where poster presenters will be on hand to answer questions and share additional insights. Groups will focus on topic areas such as critical care, pediatrics, and surgery.

Treatment options. Medication is often used to treat delirium. But attendees will get insight into nontraditional treatment options that have proven successful for medical providers and patients alike. Among them: music and digital avatars like virtual service dogs.

Annual review. During Tuesday afternoon’s Year in Review session, attendees will hear about the latest advances in delirium neurobiology. Three doctors will share their latest research and outcomes—and what it means for the larger medical field.
