Growth-mindset associations. Years ago, I read Mindset by Carol Dweck fully expecting to get validation of my growth mindset. Wrong. Despite my penchant for learning, I was shocked to discover I had a fixed mindset. Sigh, another self-improvement project—almost complete. If you’re curious, WBT Systems explains the difference between a fixed and growth mindset. They describe how to cultivate an organizational growth mindset so you can prepare your team and association to innovate and thrive.

Update: On Saturday 2/27, the Kindle version of Mindset went on sale for $1.99.

“Good enough” technology. MemberSuite says member expectations are different now in 2021, the bar is set higher. It’s time to assess your technology stack and partners because you can’t afford to continue settling for “good enough” technology, not if you want to take advantage of emerging opportunities and meet the changing needs of your members and market.

Strategic reset. If your association fits any of the five scenarios described by Lowell Aplebaum, FASAE, CAE, in his recent post, it’s time to review your strategic plan. Your organization’s strategy must offer “an inspirational, robust, and innovative pathway to a better future.”

Shrinking network. Professional and personal networks have shrunk by close to 16% during the pandemic, according to Marissa King and Balázs Kovács at the Harvard Business Review. “Over the long term, turtling up [staying inside the close family/friends shell] and a dearth of opportunities to interact with strangers are leading to network shrinkage.”

Professionally, I’m an exception; life is good. Personally, that’s another story. I enjoy seeing friends and meeting new acquaintances in the association community via Zoom coffee chats, happy hours, book club meetings, and educational events. But I work alone, so I’m more likely to take advantage of these opportunities. What do you think your members are experiencing? How can you help them maintain ties and expand their network?

Crappy governance. With such potential within grasp, why do associations settle for the current, ancient model of governance? Vu Le at NonprofitAF says we’ve been in denial about the archaic, toxic, default nonprofit board model. He advises unlearning conventional and destructive beliefs about boards and trying new governance models.

Volunteer shortage. At McKinley Advisors, David Gammel, FASAE, CAE, and Kristi Donovan, CAE, address the shrinking volunteer pool faced by many associations by saying “it’s not them, it’s you.” They explain why you’re having a tough time recruiting volunteers and how you can enhance the value of the volunteering experience.

Quick hits

  • 4 ways to raise the bar on virtual events in 2021. (Dave Lutz, Velvet Chainsaw Consulting via PCMA)
  • Fodder for conversation… This CEO just brilliantly explained how remote work will change the world by 2030, and it’s next-level. (Justin Bariso, Inc.)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout. If you’re a home cook, check out the weekly In The Kitchen posts on my Grabbing the Gusto blog.

  • As winter heads out, we enjoyed a stellar boeuf bourguignon on Sunday night. I adapted Anthony Bourdain’s recipe from his Les Halles Cookbook (sigh, I miss my old pretend boyfriend) by adding mushrooms and herbes de Provence, increasing the wine, subbing beef broth for water, and baking it at 250 instead of cooking it on the stovetop. Dare I say it, Julia, step aside. I served it with mashed potatoes, of course, and roasted broccoli.
  • All that luscious sauce cries out for dippage, so I baked sourdough focaccia. I made a half-recipe and only let it rise about five hours in the frig, instead of overnight, and it was plenty flavorful.
  • Earlier in the week, we enjoyed baked flounder topped with a mix of Parmesan, bread crumbs, parsley, lemon zest, garlic powder, and melted butter. On the side, carrots roasted with garlic powder, ancho chile powder, thyme, cinnamon, and salt.
  • The next night, we had huli huli bigeye tuna. I made half the glaze recipe, subbed a little honey for all the sugar, added sambal oelek, and basted the tuna before and during baking. I made tuna salad with the leftover tuna and glaze, adding mayo, celery, and sweet onion. On the side, Brussels sprouts roasted with ham, orange bell pepper, red onion, garlic, thyme, and salt.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link before Wednesday evening the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product centric.
