Is social media about paying attention … or getting it? For me, it’s primarily about paying attention. Twitter is a serendipitous source of good reads and inspiration. LinkedIn has its moments. But on Facebook, I’m guilty like everyone else of the typical “look what I’m up to” posts.
One of the most reliable content curators on Twitter is Bill Sheridan of the Maryland Association of CPAs who wrote:
“Doing important work, learning new skills, and building meaningful networks are taking a backseat to our desire to be noticed. Likes and follows and retweets have become our currency. Attention trumps creativity and innovation. That’s the problem with social media today. We’ve lost our way. We need to find it again.”

We’re in the midst of a trust crisis—and the way social media is abused doesn’t help. WBT Systems explains what associations can learn from nurses—the most trusted profession for the last 18 years—and how to gain the trust of members, customers and prospects.

- My favorite dish this week, no surprise to me, is a pizza. I could live on pizza and pasta but I’d be rather rotund if I did. Remember this recipe for BBQ chicken, red onion and jalapeño sheet pan pizza from Simply Recipes when you need a quick effortless meal. You can rely on rotisserie chicken, store-bought dough and BBQ sauce from a bottle. I loved the heat from the jalapeño so much I think I’ll add another one next time and maybe more chicken too. Because there will be a next time.
- I used some of the rotisserie chicken in #thestew even though the recipe didn’t call for it. That’s the Instagram-famous spiced chickpea stew with coconut and turmeric from Alison Roman at the New York Times. My leafy green of choice this time was kale. I chopped up the stems and added them along with chopped jalapeno to the onion mix. Yes, you can use kale stems instead of composting or throwing them away. Just chop them and give them cooking time to soften.
- Slow-roast gochujang chicken from Bon Appetit was the highlight of our Sunday—and, if I’m honest, rivals the pizza for best dish of the week. The chicken was excellent, the accompanying potatoes were out of this world. And why wouldn’t they be—tossed in gochujang, ginger and garlic then roasted in the pan with the chicken, wowsa. My chicken took less time than the recipe suggested, and my potatoes were big so I cut them in half.
