Association Brain Food Weekly: 1.28.22

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

alpine lake at the foot of a fir-covered mountain - inspiration for a weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityRegistration resistance. If the registration numbers for your educational programs are disappointing, WBT Systems shares several reasons people don’t commit to online courses and conferences. They also explain how to overcome registration resistance.

Connecting while working remotely. Achurch Consulting describes how to build trust and connections with your team while working remotely. They focus on ways to build affective trust—the type of trust that’s required for building solid work relationships.

Crafting an event experience. Event Farm describes two different approaches to crafting event experiences that will wow your attendees and help you achieve business outcomes. They provide low- and high-budget examples to illustrate what they mean.

Metaverse 101. Meagan Loyst spent her holiday vacation researching and writing this comprehensive introduction to the Metaverse, although as a venture capital community founder I’m sure she’s way ahead of the rest of us. Fascinating stuff.

Work in 2022. Josh Bersin is always insightful about the future of work, technology, HR, and learning. Here he shares his predictions for 2022, in short, everything is about to change. Still waiting for the new normal? Bwah ha ha!

Associations and DAOs. Marjorie Anderson at Community By Association explains why she thinks DAOs are not a good fit for associations because of the financial exclusivity upon which membership is based—at least in their current form.

Entrepreneur’s Masters. For entrepreneurs or anyone who wants to develop an entrepreneurial leadership style, John Pence shares his takeaways from MIT’s Entrepreneurial Masters Program. Best read in small doses.

Leadership development. Leadership training shouldn’t be reserved for top performers and senior management, say Navio Kwok and Winny Shen at Harvard Business Review. You could make this same argument for association and chapters. Why not offer leadership training to volunteers who show an interest in taking on new responsibilities so you can fill the pipeline?

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout.

I love trying new recipes, but sometimes I just want to zone out in the kitchen and make quick work of dinner, like blackened fillets of vermillion snapper. The next night, another old standard, Mummy Lorraine baked fish made an appearance—black sea bass fillets topped with a mix of crushed Ritz crackers, lemon zest, garlic powder, and melted butter.

However, I did rouse myself enough to try this new side dish: smoky white beans and Brussels sprouts. First, I roasted the sprouts so they would be nicely caramelized. I also added onion to the dish—onions seem to go in everything around here.

More brassicas and beans: later in the week, we had cabbage, sausage and white bean casserole for dinner. I doubled the sausage, added half an orange bell pepper, half a poblano pepper, a jalapeño pepper, and a small package of sliced mushrooms.
