September trees alongside a lake or pond – inspiration for a weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

The next decade. Jeff De Cagna, FASAE, challenged the association community to imagine it’s December 31, 2029, look back over the past decade and ask, “What did our association do to shape a different and better future for stakeholders and successors?” WBT Systems took him up on the challenge and focused on how an association’s learning business might help shape their industry’s future.

Volunteer development. At Associations Now, Mark Athitakis wrote about “a fine four-part series at Billhighway” that introduced a volunteer management model developed by Peggy Hoffman, FASAE, CAE, president of Mariner Management, and Kristine Metter, CAE, founder of Crystal Lake Partners. Their model is based on a volunteer learning journey that inspires and helps members build competencies in one area before moving up to the next—a great way to build a volunteer and leadership corps.

Extroverts working remotely. Some people really do miss the office—extroverts. I’m sure they don’t miss everything about the office but Achurch Consulting explains how extroverts can still feel socially connected and keep their energy level high while working remotely.

Association podcast. Have you listened to the Association Strong podcast? I finally got around to checking it out and it’s fantastic. What else would you expect from Tom Morrison, CEO of the Metal Treating Institute, and Dave Will, CEO of PropFuel. Let the bingeing commence!

Quick hits

  • The jigsaw puzzle of returning to the office: the future does not fit in the containers of the past. No, sir. (Rishad Tobaccowala)
  • 8 tips for facilitating nonprofit hybrid meetings. (Beth Kanter)
  • To set a positive, collaborative tone for project retrospective meetings, start by sharing this Prime Directive. (FunRetrospectives)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout.

  • Our big Sunday night meal was a creation I call “Portuguese fish skillet.” This time, I made it with black drum and black sea bass. On the side, creamed collards gratin. I subbed chopped linguica for the ham in the original collards recipe, and added mushrooms, carrots, red bell and poblano pepper to the onions. I also increased the flour and butter to 1/4 cup each because I like a 1:8 ratio for bechamel sauces.
  • During the week, we had baked amberjack steaks with lemon butter and shichimi togarashi, a tasty spice blend. On the side, green beans with caramelized red onions—I added mushrooms and garlic, subbed chicken broth for vegetable broth, and omitted the sugar. We also enjoyed pearl couscous cooked in chicken broth with sauteed onion and garlic, and sprinkled with fresh basil.
  • It’s been a while since I’ve made one of my favorites, pan-fried striped mullet. Before frying, I dredge the fillets in flour, then a mix of buttermilk and hot sauce, and finally a mix of cornmeal and garlic salt. On the side, a nuked sweet potato and leftover green beans.
