Association Brain Food Weekly: 1.21.22

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

a group of ducks flying across the sky – inspiration for a weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityMembership survey. Please participate in MGI’s 14th annual Membership Marketing Benchmarking Survey, our industry’s most comprehensive and valuable study on membership marketing. The more data MGI collects for this study, the richer the results for everyone. The survey closes next week so don’t delay.

Marketing, membership and communications awards. The ASAE Gold Circle Awards recognize excellence in marketing, membership, and communications in 15 categories. The deadlines to apply for a Gold Circle Award (2/2) and to volunteer as a GCA judge (1/31) are fast approaching. Learn more about the application process, including tips for a successful submission and insider knowledge about what the judges seek, during a 1/28 webinar—details below.

Sticky learning. Rereading something is no substitute for retrieval practice, says WBT Systems. If you’ve attended a course or session where you’ve had to recall and produce what you’ve been learning, you’ve benefited from retrieval practice. In WBT’s primer on this essential element of instruction, they explain why the brain likes retrieval practice and how to build it into the design of your educational programs.

The member experience. Too much has changed in our world to keep assuming the member experience you provided pre-pandemic is the experience your members and prospective members want, need, and expect now. MemberSuite suggests how to reevaluate the member experience and apply what you learn.

Event trends. Here’s one from Hopin to sink your teeth into, lengthy but well worth reading. All the event trends they mention are spot-on except for #3, hybrid, which doesn’t seem like a practical option for most associations.

Web3. I regret not buying Bitcoin back in 2017 when it was only $1300 (argh), so I’m determined to stay on top of what’s emerging now, starting with this introduction to Web3 by Mike Troiano at G20 Ventures.

Email chains. “Today’s norms of responsiveness are ridiculous. We shouldn’t apologize for failing to meet them,” says Joe Pinsker at The Atlantic. When you work in an office of one, like I do, it’s easy to establish healthy email protocols, like only checking a few times a day so you can focus on work, but I know it’s tough to create these boundaries in the association world. He suggests (and dismisses) options for replying at your convenience.

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout.

A bold fish like king mackerel deserves a bold sauce, like this maple barbecue glaze. I add soy sauce and a hefty amount of hot sauce to it too. On the side, roasted Brussels sprouts with bacon, onion, orange bell pepper, and garlic, plus roasted sweet potato wedges sprinkled with ground ginger, Japanese seven spice, cayenne, and garlic powder.

The next night we had Marseilles flounder braise. I added red bell pepper to the dish, sliced the celery thinner, used black olives instead of green, and celery leaves instead of cilantro.

Our cold-night comfort meal this week was chicken thighs with cranberry thyme sauce. On the side, kale and collards sautéed with bacon, onion, orange and red bell pepper, poblano pepper, and jalapeño pepper, plus roasted butternut squash with maple syrup, smoked paprika, garlic powder, cinnamon, and cayenne.
