Best Benefit Ever: Satellite GPS Device Discounts

The American Motorcyclist Association’s new discount could come in handy on remote roads, where a mobile signal is anything but a sure thing—or if, heaven forbid, a member’s bike is stolen.

What’s the benefit? The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is giving its members a discount on SPOT satellite devices, which are useful for everything from enabling phone calls from remote places to preventing thefts to letting loved ones know your whereabouts during a long weekend on the open highway. The SPOT Trace, for example, gives bike owners the exact whereabouts of the device and, thus, the location of their stolen motorcycle.

Why it works for them: Much like motorcyclists themselves, the devices go places that a cellphone signal may not—and that’s where the gadgets come in handy. “SPOT satellite devices are not only a great tool for motorcyclists, who are sharing their stories and travels more and more every year across all forms of media, but they also provide an important safety net for everyone who enjoys exploring off the beaten path,” AMA Vice President of Operations Jeff Massey said in a news release.

Other benefits: AMA offers a wide array of other member benefits, including discounted roadside assistance, a subscription to American Motorcyclist magazine, access to more than 1,200 social clubs nationwide, and reduced rates on things as diverse as hotels, motorcycle shows, and Sam’s Club membership.

And if members find themselves in Pickerington, Ohio (near Columbus, so there’s a good chance their cellphones will work), they can use their membership for a discounted admission to AMA’s Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
