Cherry blossoms and free professional development resources and events for CAEs, association staff and others in the association community

When I was in charge of getting a new AMS back at my old association, I had no idea how to approach selection and implementation. Even worse, I didn’t even know how clueless I was. If only I had read a post like this one from the DelCor team about buying association management software. They walk you through some of the fundamental steps of AMS selection, including the RFP (and RFI) process.

Human contact is becoming a luxury good,” said Nellie Bowles at the New York Times. Now that everyone has their face locked into screens throughout the day, people who can afford it are paying for “human engagement.” What does this mean for associations? Membership for most is an online experience, but your local chapters and affiliates offer the luxury of “human engagement.” Hopefully, you and your chapters aren’t stuck in an “us vs. them” rut or you’ll miss a valuable opportunity.

CB Insights looks at 12 industries that are supposedly being killed off by Millennials, if you believe the clickbait headlines. The real situation is more complex: these industries haven’t adapted to changes in their market, but newer, more adaptive brands have.

Why take up valuable board meeting time with orientation when directors can go through a self-paced online training program instead? WBT Systems discusses how to use your LMS for leadership development and all kinds of volunteer training.

Some quick hits before we get to next week’s free webinars:

  • Which content should be public, gated, or members-only on your association’s website, and why? (Maneesha Manges, HighRoad Solution)
  • New “auto renewal” laws in DC and several states will affect how associations handle membership communications. (Venable LLP)
  • Everything you need to know about writing meta descriptions—the Google search preview text. (Bridget Deutz, HubSpot)

Now for the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have any free webinars or events coming up, please send me the link. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not product-centric.
