There is an opportunity cost associated with everything. When I am here, I cannot be there. When I am thinking about this, I cannot think about that. When I am doing that, I cannot do this. In our associations, we are always living with the consequences of opportunity cost. The missed opportunity can cost us money or time and more intangible things like the ability to carve out space to think, a new relationship, or a good idea.

Associations are notable for encouraging multitasking. But without close attention, all those tasks can drain workers. People talk about “wearing many hats” so often in the association world that you’d be forgiven if you sometimes think you’re in the haberdashery business. The many-hats conceit is often discussed with a smirk, or as a point of pride, especially in small-staff organizations—Monday I’m an events coordinator, Tuesday I’m a publisher, Wednesday I’m in credentialing, and so on.

I watched the news reports from Texas and was horrified at the scale of this disaster. I grew up on the Jersey shore where I’ve been evacuated due to storms, but I have never seen this level of disaster. My heart goes out to the victims and I want to help. When a natural disaster strikes, I make a donation to my go to national or global charities for disaster relief Team Rubicon, Save the Children , and/or Global Giving.

The NAHB Association Management Conference in Denver may have been the best ever! From the keynote speakers to roof-top receptions and vintage arcade games, it was an incredible few days. Thanks to NAHB for providing the perfect balance for professional growth and relaxation. The team was astounded by the number of association executives who took the time to share their successes with the GrowthZone Builders Edition AMS, as well as those that stopped by to learn more about GrowthZone.

As the number of older motorists grows, a variety of groups—both in the automotive industry and outside of it—are offering resources and advice to help them stay safe on the road and choose the right vehicle. Older drivers may have limitations they didn’t have when they were younger, but that doesn’t mean their car keys should be taken away, according to associations that have taken steps to help older drivers stay behind the wheel safely.

A sense of ownership is crucial for members to feel comfortable engaging with each other. How do we foster it? Members need to trust that their community is a safe space to participate - whether they’re providing positive or negative feedback to their peers. Never allow members to attack someone for sharing their thoughts, and take time to consider whether or not to allow anonymity in posting or reporting content on your community.

Hurricane Harvey has forced major Texas event facilities to take on a new role, as the massive storm continues to dump tons of rain on the state’s Gulf coast. With a deadly hurricane bringing unprecedented floodwaters to Texas, convention centers in the state’s two largest cities are taking on an unusual but necessary new role as places of emergency shelter.

To increase accountability and transparency, the American Civil Liberties Union of California launched a campaign to help voters learn more about their district attorneys. “ Hey, Meet Your DA! ”—a new campaign launched on August 22 by the American Civil Liberties Union of California—is calling attention to the important role of district attorneys. As part of this campaign, ACLU of CA is using an interactive website to help Californians find out which DA represents their county.
