Increasingly I find colleagues talking about how they are using stand-up meetings in their organizations. Stand-ups are quick group gatherings that are so focused and generally so brief that you remain standing for the entire conversation. In my first association staff position, we started most days with an all-staff stand-up gathering. While enjoying coffee and catching up we quickly reviewed organizational priorities for the day and key information related to member inquiries.

"For some it is a frequent visitor, always lurking in the background. For others it is an infrequent, but no less inhospitable guest, one that always seems to arrive at the most inopportune moments. And few, if any, are completely immune to falling prey to the siren call of the little voice in your head that says, “No you can’t.” And just like that, the little engine that could, our own belief and confidence, loses steam and the train of innovation and creativity stalls on the track.

As always, Seth Godin is able to execute a great riff on a timely topic : what meetings and conferences need to be offering to justify the increasing costs and hassles associated with traveling to them. My favorite quote is his concluding line: The new rule seems to be that if you're going to spend the time and money to see someone face-to-face, be in their face.

I played tennis earlier this week. And as always is the case the first time out each year, it wasn't too pretty. With each successive groundstroke though, the rhythm returned, muscle memory returned, and the shots became more precise. But too many balls were still spraying outside the lines until I remembered the simple axiom that almost always picks up my game: move your feet.

From time to time an interesting piece of news or information crosses my desk or computer screen about an SLA member doing something fascinating or, at least, out of the ordinary from their day-to-day job. Such was the case recently when I received an interesting email alerting me to the fact that Rachel Kolsky, who is a member of SLA Europe and has worked in the f

We aren't spending enough time thinking about knowledge transfer. Meeting planners and presenters design for the moment: make this meeting run smoothly, have this session well-attended, help this attendee find the right information. But what about when someone returns to their actual workplace? Sure, we may have provided content they can use, but that's where our intentional efforts end.
