Wild Apricot Software News October 2009

Wild Apricot

Wild Apricot version 3.2 was released on October 1st, as planned. We have since patched a couple of minor problems, but all in all it has been the smoothest version release at least in the last 12 months. My personal thanks to our developers and testers! Also, special thanks to Giuliano Valentino for creating a nice video summary of key updates in version 3.2.

Owning the Outcomes; Renting the Responsibilities

Idea Architects

When I worked on the college campus, semester’s end was always a goldmine for dumpster divers. Actually, they didn’t even have to dive; just roam the curbs and the apartment complexes. There they would find stacks of still desirable furniture that apartment tenants willingly left behind. Departing students also often left their security deposit, seeing it as spent money not worth recouping compared to the hard work of cleaning and detailing the home they would never see again.

Social Media

Associations Live

So this is some of what I learned at the several social media sessions that were held at the #MSAE fall conference. (If you go to twitter.com, search for #MSAE - you will see some conversation about the conference.) The # is called a hash tag. And, first and foremost, all organizations should have a social media strategy. Here's a sample provided by one our members.

The Growth Trap

High Context

I’ve written and spoken much about how associations and non-profits in general tend to have a hard time ending programs and services. You can read more about this here: Slaying Sacred Zombie Cows. I’m going to take this same idea in a bit of a different direction today. Many organizations innovate through growth. As membership increases or non-dues revenue goes up, they now have more resources with which to start new initiatives.

So do my memories of the way it was for each of these circumstances have anything to do with the way it is now and the way it will be in the future ?

Serving Current Users in a New Site

High Context

Last week I was asked about how to handle current users who may be confused or frustrated by a redesigned site that has a new layout, navigation, etc. Ideally the new site will be easier to use for all concerned but for people who learned the old site, there will still be a learning curve. From my perspective, the best path to resolve this issue really depends on what your current audiences come to the site for and if you will continue to support those same outcomes with the new one.

They exulted, “Behold, we have seen the promised land!”.

Extreme Separation of Content Management and Presentation

However, as I have warned in earlier posts, the flexibility may not be worth the cost for all publishers. Unless your business model depends on aggressively leveraging your content and you can afford to play on the cutting edge, a lighter weight “website in a box” style architecture may give

The Princess Paradigm

There was a great column by Laura Vanderkam in the Forum Section of USA Today on August 12, 2009. It focused on the “Princess Problem”, which is society telling little girls that her prince will come and save her, when reality is that more women are the sole bread earner for the family. The fact that caught my eye, as the father of a 7 year old girl who loves the Disney princess was “85% of men had an internal locus of control”.
