'Not Styrofoam, Polystyrene Dow Chemical, a major firm in the industry, would like everyone to know that what you call Styrofoam is actually polystyrene, a completely different substance. The company, in a Washington Post article , explains that Styrofoam is used in only a handful of ways—primarily insulation—and is almost always light blue. “We actually do make it blue for that reason,” notes Dow’s Tim Lacey, in charge of building solutions in the Americas.
