Unsuck Your Meetings

Thanks For Playing

WAY back on Tuesday, August 1, the weekly #assnchat topic was productivity and time management , a personal favorite. I didn't exactly do a rigorously scientific poll, but the #1 answer to "biggest productivity killer" was: meetings. Planned meetings, unplanned meetings, drop in meetings, "do you have a few minutes?" meetings - just about everyone hated meetings.

Reads of the Week: September 28, 2012

Reid All About it

“Sometimes I try to leave my narrow path and join the swirling mainstream of life, but I always find myself drawn inexorably back toward the chasm’s edge…”. He’s a dark one, Edvard Munch. I always knew he was the broody type, but until I learned more about him from John Coffey, deputy director for art at the N.C. Museum of Art, I had no idea how haunted and anxious he was.

Reads of the Week: September 21, 2012

Reid All About it

I’m keeping it light. My favorite subject line this week was on a message posted by an association executive director in ASAE’s online community: “I need to shoot my leadership.”. What?! Having trouble with the board? Nope, he was only looking for a photographer to do some head shots. How disappointing, but what a hilarious subject line, good job. My favorite tweet of the week came from @capricecrane: “It’s weird there aren’t more songs about pizza.”.

It’s the Culture, Stupid

Jamie Notter

Organizational culture is a funny thing. I think most people would agree that it’s important. I don’t hear people saying, “Nah, it doesn’t matter what our organizational culture is; we’ll perform well regardless.” And if you ask a boss what the culture is like at their organization, they’ll typically use positive descriptors.

5 ways to communicate the value of your membership

Optimist Consulting

Your membership organisation is likely to have a membership fee, however do you know and communicate what the value of membership is to your members and potentials? The value of what they receive from being a member, should outweigh the fee. I recently carried out a project for a client and as part of that I spoke to some of their members. It was interesting to hear how many of them had received referrals from their entry on the organisation’s website.

Plans: Control over Clarity

Jamie Notter

Organizations cling to strategic planning (despite strong evidence of its ineffectiveness), partially because many have experienced the downside of randomness. New boss, new direction. New Board Chair, new direction. One really aggressive employee in another department pushing a particular activity, and you end up shifting time and attention away from what you know needs to be done.

Do you charge association components for services?

Mariner

September 28, 2012. That seemingly simple question related to association member chapters sparked what I hope will be a discussion around the real issue. The question was posted on the ASAE Component Relations discussion group by an association exec looking to bolster a case to her board to charge components for the cost of collecting their dues because it utilizes resources without reimbursement and incurs – again without reimbursement – credit card charges.

Moving Participants from Passive to Active

Here's a very simple principle anyone who makes presentations or leads workshops should commit to memory: for every segment of content, a more engaging way to present it exists. As a result, designing powerful learning experiences requires us to go through a simple process for each content segment of a program: brainstorm possible ways to teach it, ones that move participants from passive to active whenever possible; select one of those options as our initial planned format/teaching technique; o
