Ah, Friday, and a long weekend too for many of you. Not for me – too much work to do – a good thing, so trust me, I’m not complaining. I’ll make room for enough down time to feel recharged on Monday morning, in case you care. Caring is in the air, you know, or it should be, we can make it so…. The world needs more “everyday mundane acts of caring” like the ones John Haydon shares in his post, The #1 Paradigm Shift You Need to Make in 2013.

I recently read an interview with Dinesh Paliwal, the CEO of Harman International Industries, an audio equipment manufacturing company. (Think Harman/Kardon speakers) A few leadership points he made were very interesting. First, a technique he uses when hiring new employees – he takes them to dinner with their spouse and his. In a social setting he gets to see a few key things: 1.

For any trade association that develops specifications or other technical documents, publication is a tremendous milestone. It marks the end of a journey comprised of significant contributions from many member resources around the world. While it’s always a good idea to celebrate such an achievement within an association, it is important to remember that while [.

I love this Dilbert cartoon. It's been sitting on my desktop for a few months now because it is such a good example of what I call "Decision Weasels." (I'll give a nod to Scott Adams and " The Way of the Weasel " which I am sure has inspired some of this post out of the depths of my memory.) I've met a few of them over my career. Decision weasels are usually in positions of power in our associations.

image source This post got me thinking about the messy unknown, a term coined by Tom and David Kelley to describe the place outside your comfort zone. In the messy unknown, they say elsewhere , you have to deal with unexpected findings, with uncertainty, and with irrational people who say things you don't want to hear. But you must venture into this place, because in the messy unknown you also find insights and creative breakthroughs.

For the self-employed, the end of January means time to pay quarterly and annual estimated business taxes. It's a lot of somewhat confusing forms (thank goodness I followed the advice to hire an accountant, because trying to do this myself would, no doubt, have driven me around the bend). And it's easy to be grouchy about writing the checks and scheduling the electronic payments.

For anyone obsessed with education, this video is a mind-blower. Here is a must-read article that details more about the company behind this amazing new platform, as well as their plans to begin installing these EXODesks in elementary schools in Panama. The debate about association education needs to take a quantum leap forward if we are planning on staying competitive in this new arena.

My kids are in middle school and high school, and they were telling me this morning about one of their recent lessons about the difference between correlation and causation. Apparently you can show a statistically significant correlation between a decrease in highway traffic deaths and an increase in imports of Mexican lemons (who knew?!). But this is just correlation–it doesn’t prove causation.

It's a weekly show, hosted by Shelly Alcorn , where a panel of three guests and Shelly discuss issues of importance and interest to associations, usually based on a report, TEDtalk, current event, etc.

All learning IS experience. Everything else is just information. ~ Albert Einstein. Talking is a critical part of that learning experience. We talk so we can understand. We talk so we can remember. We talk so we can learn. But who does the majority of talking at a conference and who does the majority of listening? The speakers talk as the audience listens.

The staff and board leadership had been working diligently for about two hours, engaged in some meaningful discussion around the organization’s mission and vision. I had focused my facilitation on keeping the dialogue moving forward, but also trying to stretch the participants’ sense of what might be possible in their organization. It seemed to me they were limiting themselves to typical mission and vision platitudes.

Across the nonprofit sector, organizations invest heavily in donor retention efforts, yet the struggle of cultivating lasting relationships remains. I asked one of my mentors -- Barry Schapiro (bio below) to guest blog on association leadership. Barry and I have known each other for more than 20 years. Part 2 will be up tomorrow. I've written before about Kurt Lewin's framework that behavior is a function of people interacting with their environment. Most people when setting New Year's Resolutions write commitments about the behaviors they plan on engaging in more regularly or goals they hope to achieve as a result of changes in their behavior. I did something much simpler: I changed my environment to enable better choice-making.

Apparently, the ability for Facebook pages to create groups may be coming soon. Assuming this is true--which I'd venture to guess it is, since Google+ pages can now create communities--is it a good idea to set up a brand community on Facebook? Call me bitter, but as a person who once watched a useful and valued Facebook feature--the discussion tab-- be removed by Facebook because they no longer felt it useful, my answer to this question is a hearty "no.
