When someone decides to join your association, she's responding to a promise made - your brand promise. Your association has promised her a certain experience with your communications, your staff, and your events.

The myth about ‘special interests’

Golden's Rules for Association

Much of the public thinks of associations as “special interests” who do nothing but lobby the system to game advantage (even though U. S. government data shows that associations spend many times more on educational activities than on lobbying). In my opinion, “special interest” is a pejorative only when applied to a group whose interests [.].

What CBS Sunday Morning got wrong about lobbying

Association Advocacy Chick

This week, CBS Sunday Morning, one of my must-watch shows on tv, dedicated their opening segment to lobbying. The segment, entitled Behind the closed doors of Washington lobbyists was to give viewers a fly on the wall account of the lobbying industry, considered the third largest in DC after the federal government and tourism. While I applaud CBS for covering this topic, I felt it did very little to combat the negative view of the lobbying profession.
