I am not an innovator. Correction: I have been convinced that I cannot be an innovator. If you were to play word association with advocacy , I’m sure innovation is not the word you’d come up with. But why is that? Many associations insist that it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Yes, traditional lobbying, grassroots advocacy, and political involvement are effective ways of moving or defeating legislation.

Yesterday was the kickoff of Informz’s first Users Conference. The day was jam-packed with rooms full of Informz users and partners learning and sharing best practices relating to email marketing for associations and non-profits. Topics included messaging, design, deliverability and other typical email marketing topics. However the big idea I walked away with was how closely email marketing and social media are aligned and coexist successfully.

Growing up, pictures like this were on my list of most frustrating things: This is one of those pictures that if you are able to look through it, a 3-D image pops out at you (a stereogram). Friends and family alike would take a quick glance, and say oh - of course it is a (I wont ruin this one for you if you can not yet see it) and try as I might, I would still just see a weird picture.

Every day it seems like new technologies come along and I don’t want to ignore them because my own personal experience is that some of them will make a huge difference. I guess it’s my fault, to some extent. I certainly have been guilty of encouraging the theory that it’s really great to see how many ideas you can cram into a book, seminar, discussion, pamphlet or presentation on membership. After all, “101 Ways to Get and Keep Your Members” was not only title of my first bestselling book, it was also the title of the first live seminar I ever held.
