While the association community flies this weekend to St. Louis for the annual ASAE conference, I’ll be driving a few hours to spend a week with lots of family and friends at beautiful Ocean Isle Beach here in North Carolina. I’m sad about missing the opportunity to spend time with friends at ASAE, but I’m easily consoled by the thought of a coastal breeze, warm water and sand between my toes.

I am aware there is a lot to be said for the WIFM concept. The WIFM idea is very well established and will continue to have a place in discussions regarding the value proposition we offer to member-citizens in associations.

Given that I work for a mental health association, I have the right to use word “insanity” to describe the last couple of weeks. APA’s convention and ASAE’s annual meeting are back to back. Which means for the past few months or so, I’ve been preparing very different presentations for both, planning different outfits for both and just trying to maintain common sense throughout the process.

Several newer online giving sites are following the belief that if everyone gives a dollar you can make a lot of change. Vonate.org, TippingBucket.org, and LoveDrop.us are just 3 examples that approach this micro-donating concept in very different ways. Vonate.org. bills itself as the $1 Movement. Donors make a yearly contribution of $15, $3 goes to operating costs and the remaining 12 is divided up a dollar each month to the charity of your choice.

Then, once I knew Patrick (aka Mr. Maggie McGary) it was something he attended and I heard about through him. Once I joined ASAE three years ago and started connecting with other members via Twitter, it was something that sounded really fun and watching Patrick go while I followed the Twitter stream sucked.

I’m just putting the finishing touches on my Membership 4.0 programs for this fall and I’m facing a technology conundrum. I want to continue holding in-person, face-to-face-to-face, y’all come public seminars like the ones that have been so successful for more than 20 years. Yes, attendance isn’t what it was in the pre-internet days, but we still get a very good turnout of representatives from a wide variety of organizations.
