The Thing About Gratitude

Question of the Week: What is one thing you feel grateful for today?

Gratitude is easier to feel on days when the sun is shining and life seems to be going your way. It is much harder for most of us to see the things we can be grateful for when it feels like we are on the losing end of everything.

Maybe you have seen the “highlight reel” post from a peer’s social media channel and played into the comparison game in your own mind.

It could be that you’ve had a particularly bad week and home, auto, and relationship problems have hit you at one time.

Or, maybe simply turning on the news and bearing witness to the day-after-day reports of violence, war, and injustice has you feeling out of sorts. (How could it not?)

However, studies suggest we should purposefully find something to be grateful for in defiance of the hardships we may face as this practice of gratitude can make us more resilient and increase our success in life.

Don’t believe it?

“In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.” (Read: Giving thanks can make you happier,” Harvard Health Publishing, August 14, 2021.)
