Association Brain Food: 3.17.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

the coast of Ireland – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association communityOnline learning. With for-profit and higher ed competition growing, your association’s online courses must stand out in the crowd. But excellent content isn’t enough to gain market share. Content is a commodity, says WBT Systems. Learn what elements of engaging and effective online learning you must build into your live and on-demand programs.

Chapter habits. A quote from James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, got Billhighway thinking about chapter practices: “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” They point out seven of those systems—or bad habits—and suggest good habits that chapters should practice instead.

Workplace culture. By now, we understand the influence of culture on an organization’s success. But where and how do you start improving culture? Propel explains how their culture assessment evaluates eight primary culture patterns, your change readiness and where you land on the spectrum from traditional to contemporary to futurist.

Association revenue. Professionals for Association Revenue released their Association Business Development Landscape Survey report. They surveyed 100 associations about revenue growth strategies, business development practices and skills, risks and obstacles to growth, reporting and metrics, and performance of membership, events and non-dues revenue programs.

Gen Z in the workplace. I know we have to be careful about generational stereotypes but Sara Friedman at HubSpot shares the results of a survey of Gen Z professionals that describes what they’re looking for from an employer and what they want to accomplish in their careers. Valuable information for associations!

Newsletters. I bet members interact with your newsletters more regularly than any other product or service, which means your association should thoughtfully plan and design each edition. But do you? Rasa.io shares 15 ways to improve your newsletter content and delivery.

Quick hits

Seven ways to create serendipity and connections for virtual attendees. (Devin Cleary, MeetingsNet)

How to eliminate content bottlenecks and keep your content marketing engine running. (Jimmy Daly, Superpath)

Personas, even well-researched ones, are worthless for marketing. (Matt Lerner)

Trends to watch in March 2023. (Mike Loukides, O’Reilly Radar)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free educational events if you prefer takeout.

I made a delicious feast on Sunday: menu #1 from Whatever Happened to Sunday Dinner by Lisa Caponigri. But I’m following my Italian cookery intuition instead of sticking rigidly to her recipes and menus. We started with crostini topped with a spread made from cannellini beans, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, basil pesto, salt and pepper. I mixed the pesto into the bean mixture instead of dabbing it onto each crostini. I will definitely make that again.

The main event was chicken (instead of veal) piccata with steamed asparagus (another menu deviation because, oh my, I knew asparagus in that sauce would be so good and it was) and bucatini amatriciana. As usual, the pasta was the highlight for me. I cheated by using bacon instead of pancetta or guanciale for the pasta sauce. The other ingredients are onion, garlic, marinara, red pepper flakes and parmesan-romano (instead the pecorino-romano she suggests which is more than twice the price at my store). I could eat several times a week every week but I’d have to live in sweatpants the rest of my life.

Earlier for dinner: baked bluefish with potatoes, Genoese style, another excellent Italian recipe, this one adapted from Marcela Hazan—can’t go wrong there. On the side, roasted broccoli with red onion, garlic powder and red pepper flakes.
