The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…
I’m not publishing Brain Food next Friday (10/2) because I’ll be hiking in southern Utah, so this edition includes all the events I know about in the next two weeks.
Virtual conference communications survey. The ASAE Communication Professionals Advisory Council requests your participation in a short, 11 question survey to help the community understand the challenges of planning virtual conference communications.
Conference attendee learning journey. WBT Systems explains how to help your virtual conference attendees continue their learning and networking experience. Since attendees will forget most of what they hear and lose touch with new connections, associations should provide a learning experience that goes beyond the confines of an isolated event.
Virtual conference experience. Ryan Costello at Event Farm says great content alone doesn’t make for a great virtual conference experience. He describes what attendees are truly seeking from an event—and it’s not a passive session-watching experience.
Diversity and inclusion in marcomm. At the NTEN blog, Jarrett Way from Mighty Citizen explains how to improve diversity and inclusion in your marketing and communications. He says real change doesn’t happen overnight, but requires a shift in culture, specifically, “recognizing a comfortable status quo and wanting to be better. A lack of diversity isn’t an indictment on your organization, but rather a symptom of that implicit bias.”
Speaker panel diversity. New research from EventMB says event speaker panels are still not diverse. Keneisha Williams, co-founder of Black In Events, and Dylan Monorchio of Event MB provide details on the findings and discuss barriers to progress.
Quick hits before we get to the list of next week’s free education:
- What not to do when planning your next virtual event. (JT Long, Smart Meetings)
- 5 unusual ways to find new inspiration for content. (KiKi L’Italien, Association Chat)
- Norwegian outdoor living concept ‘friluftsliv’ could be a valuable pandemic coping strategy. (Amanda McGowan, PRI The World)
Good eats—skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer take-out. If you’re a home cook, check out the weekly In The Kitchen posts on my Grabbing the Gusto blog.
- I found an old unopened bag of jalapeno pretzels hiding in my pantry—which is really a bookcase in my office. Since they were stale, I crushed them in the food processor and used them as a coating for pan-fried catfish—first dredging the fillets in flour and then egg. I must say, what a super idea it was.
- On the side, we had sautéed greens and roasted carrot fries, another good recipe to keep handy.
- The next night was comfort food all the way: blackened red drum with cheesy grits—and more greens.
- I was hankering for Indian food so on Sunday I pan-fried flounder per this recipe for chepa vepudu aka fish fry. Ooh, that spice paste was excellent. I served the fish with mint-cilantro chutney, a recipe from Modern Spice, an Indian cookbook by Monica Bhide.
- On the side, I made mustard greens (and kale) masala. The recipe didn’t include ingredients for the ginger-garlic paste so I used some of the fish recipe’s spice paste. So good. The leftovers have been great for breakfast in an egg fried rice type of thing.
- And to round out the meal, a fantastic chickpea salad with dried apricots and almonds. Enjoying those leftovers too.
Here are the educational events scheduled for the next two weeks. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link before Wednesday evening the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.
