As a freelancer who works alone in a home office, I understand social isolation, but I’m an introvert who loves the solitude—and gets out enough—so I’m okay, in case you were wondering, Mum. But, the research proves that loneliness is a big problem these days, especially for younger generations. WBT Systems explains how association membership can be an antidote to the loneliness epidemic.

Email open rates are depressingly low for many associations, which is so strange when you think about it. Wouldn’t members always open emails from their association? If only. MemberSuite suggests several tactics that can help your association improve its email open rate.

26 percent of American adults haven’t read even part of a book within the past year. I find that so sad. Christina DesMarais at Inc. shares the benefits of reading, according to science.

I came upon a quote this weekend that sums up the state of reading in my house:

“Every morning, I have woken up knowing that I will never run out of books to read. That has been my life.” —Kenzaburo Oe

Some quick hits before we get to next week’s free webinars:

  • “Attention is the beginning of devotion.” Reading Mary Oliver in an age of distraction. (Franklin Foer, The Atlantic)
  • How to have more epiphanies. (Stephanie Vozz, Fast Company)
  • “Plugging into a public USB port is kind of like finding a toothbrush on the side of the road and deciding to stick it in your mouth. You have no idea where that thing has been.” Point made. (Suzanne Rowan Kelleher, Forbes)

Good eats:

  • Another great gadget dish: spiralized kohlrabi aglio e olio from Inspiralize Everything. It’s just like the spaghetti dish—olive oil, garlic, red pepper flakes, parsley and parmesan. I added raisins to mine.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have any free webinars or events coming up, please send me the link. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not product-centric.
