Virtual networking incubator. Amanda Kaiser, Member Engagement Specialist at Kaiser Insights LLC, and Arianna Rehak, CEO and Co-Founder at Matchbox Virtual Media, have cooked up a fantastic-looking experience during which you can learn how to radically strengthen your virtual events by offering meaningful, quality networking opportunities for members and attendees. Together, with your cohort, you will solve the virtual event networking problem while participating firsthand in a variety of virtual networking experiences. Applications are open until January 29. Expect six refreshingly vibrant and highly engaging gatherings held every other week, starting February 11.

Rockefeller habits. Maddie Grant and Jamie Notter at Propel have launched a free course, Introduction to the Rockefeller Habits. Anticipating the question forming in your mind right now, Jamie wrote a post titled, If You Don’t Know What the Rockefeller Habits Mean for Associations, You Should. A few CEOs whom I admire practice these habits so I plan to make room in my schedule to take the course. Because there’s always time to learn, right?

Virtual volunteer fatigue. WBT Systems suggests putting on your behavioral scientist hat if you want to recruit and engage volunteers while virtual fatigue is running rampant. They share ten strategies for motivating members to volunteer and mentally show up for meetings.

Sponsorships. You can always count on Bruce Rosenthal for insightful advice on sponsorship programs. His 21 tips to improve your corporate partnership program (with links to additional resources) is the place to start (and return to) if your sponsorship program needs tweaking or overhauling.

Associations in 2021. Jay Younger of McKinley Advisors said, ”The passage of time provides us with the gift of perspectiveto make sense of each of life’s unpredictable twists and turns.” He shares his hopes for association initiatives in the coming year, plus wishes them “the gift of perspectiveto enable us to adjust our worldview and consider some of the good along with the bad.”

Quick hits

  • The joys of being an absolute beginner—for life. (Tom Vanderbilt, The Guardian)
  • Did you know? Wilmington 1898: When white supremacists overthrew a U.S. government. (Toby Luckhurst, BBC News)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer take-out. If you’re a home cook, check out the weekly In The Kitchen posts on my Grabbing the Gusto blog.

  • I love discovering new fish preps since I get two pounds of fish every week. This weirdly named but excellent Bon Appétit recipe for green seasoning baked cod (flounder in my case) tasted like summer. I adjusted the peppers, using a whole habanero, but only half a gigantic red bell pepper.
  • Remember the working mom’s go-to meal, hamburger (or tuna) helper? Make your own: homemade hamburger helper. This website’s user experience is horrible: too many ads and something that prevented me from scrolling down to the recipe, so I PDF’d it. It’s so obnoxious, I almost don’t want to send you there but we liked this simple dish. And, yes, I know I have a free, crappy baby WP-hosted site with awkward ads I don’t control, so who am I to talk, but it requires no maintenance and works for me. Back to the recipe, I used ground bison instead of beef and added tomato paste and extra pasta. Next time, I’ll add mushrooms too.
  • We hadn’t had greens in a few weeks, gasp, so I made a collards sauté to go along with our fatty pasta. I added bacon, red bell, red onion, carrot, jalapenos and garlic to the pan with a swirl of sherry vinegar at the end.
  • If you have vegetable odds and sods hanging out in the frig, make a frittata. The one I made recently included broccoli stems, scallions, red bell pepper, garlic and leftover crispy kielbasa (the garnish for last week’s split pea soup), and was topped with a mix of cheeses. Any leftover collards will probably end up in a frittata too.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link before Wednesday evening the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.
