Marketing copy. If you’re frequently under pressure to come up with clever and compelling marketing copy, I feel for you. Either you have it or you don’t but you have to produce anyways. That’s when marketers turn to their swipe file: a collection of copied and pasted blurbs that hopefully provide inspiration. This week, WBT Systems shared a swipe file of marketing blurbs for association conferences, courses and credentialing programs—have at it!

Event safety. The team at Event Farm has been hosting a series of webinars about the safe return to in-person events. During the last one, they introduced their event safety playbook full of tips and resources. Check it out before you get too deep into your planning process.

API basics. If you’re a regular person (i.e., not a techie) in charge of selecting and implementing technology, you need to know a bit about APIs. MemberSuite shared some API basics, just enough so you know what questions you might have to ask and what pitfalls you need to look out for.

Remote work technology. Achurch Consulting are the go-to consultants in the association space for remote work so they have opinions, naturally. They recently shared a list of must-have technology for remote work along with tips for selection and implementation.

Hybrid work. Microsoft’s 2021 Work Trend Index focuses on the move to hybrid work. Some of the highlighted trends are alarming: leaders are out of touch with employees and need a wake-up call, high productivity is masking an exhausted workforce, Gen Z is at risk and will need to be re-energized, and shrinking networks are endangering innovation. Yikes.

Quick hits

  • Five takeaways from the Digital Networking Incubator designed by Amanda Kaiser and Matchbox Virtual Media. (Sarah Michel, Velvet Chainsaw Consulting)
  • Google’s new search ranking factor: core web vitals, a set of page experience metrics related to page speed, responsiveness and visual stability. (Amanda Gant, Orbit Media Studios)
  • 13 questions you should ask to understand if a company cares about diversity, equity and inclusion. (Sarah Schultz, Scouted)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout. If you’re a home cook, check out the weekly In The Kitchen posts on my Grabbing the Gusto blog.

  • Last week, in-person social gatherings returned to my calendar, including my first book club dinner in more than a year. What a treat to sit around a table chatting with friends. Before I headed out, I made blackened bluefish—my blackened spice mix recipe is at the bottom of this post—for Jim. I ate my portion the next few days for lunch. On the side, roasted broccoli and nuked sweet potato.
  • The next night, soft shell crabs again, I’m not complaining—the same preparation as last week because it’s so good, although we had them on buns this time. On the side, a mix of sautéed greens (arugula, red Russian kale, radish and napini kale) with orange bell pepper, red onion, green onions and dried cranberries, and frozen onion rings.
  • Hugs in the house! The other big event was a Mother’s Day cookout with 20 family members (plus three wee ones and three dogs) on our deck. Our get-togethers are always potluck so we had lots of food. I made chicken tinga in the slow cooker, inspired by a Pati Jinich recipe, although I start with boneless, skinless chicken thighs. My accompaniments were tortillas, slaw, salsa verde, pico de gallo, avocado and lime wedges.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link before Wednesday evening the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product centric.
