A new endowment launched by Master Builders of Iowa will fund innovative solutions to close the industry’s skills gap and bring younger workers into the construction field. This week, Master Builders of Iowa announced the launch of MBI Works, a $5 million endowment to fund new resources for career education and workforce recruitment.

One person keeping an eye on the trend is Leigh Zeitz, a past president of the Kiwanis Rough Risers in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and webmaster for the club’s blog. While Kiwanis continues to do important fundraising and service work supporting youth initiatives, he says it’s harder to recruit new generations of members.

Recruited by one of my customers, I was lured into the publishing industry to work on college textbooks for computer science and management information systems. I worked for a company in Boston for years before transferring to another publishing company in Iowa, which was short-lived because of mismatched expectations.

This particular group is not recruiting nationally, but decided to put an ad in the local paper, hoping to find a needle in a haystack. This ad is typical of micro associations with a dysfunctional board, limited volunteer resources or expertise to draw on, and little to no money. Hundreds of thousands of them exist.
