Non-dues revenue. WBT Systems recently hosted an ideation session with Non-Dues-a-Palooza to come up with ideas for revenue-generating online education programs. Check out the 30 ideas featured in their post and see if you can “yes and” any of them into revenue generators for your association.

Sponsorships. Staying on the revenue theme, Dan Kowitz and Bruce Rosenthal of Partnership Professionals Network explain how the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses changed from tired old platinum/gold/silver conference sponsorship packages to a sponsorship program offering yearlong, customized Premier Partnerships.

AMS vs MMS. Membership management systems might cost a lot less than an association management system, but MemberSuite explains what you’re missing if you go with the bargain option. I keep hearing, “You get what you pay for” echoing in my head.

Cultural trends. Andrew Hutchinson at Social Media Today introduces a report from Reddit that may not at first seem applicable to associations, but it makes you aware of what’s going on out there and reminds you that not everyone lives like you—always a helpful mindset. Reddit crunched data from their 100k+ communities to uncover four pandemic-inspired trends they predict will become more embedded cultural shifts.

In-person conference/show feedback. Kyle Hillman, CMM, CMP of Hillman Events attended IMEX and shares his constructive criticism. He covers different aspects of the conference and makes some winning suggestions. One of his opening observations sums it up: “IMEX felt like IMEX of 5 years ago and that seems like a missed opportunity.” Could the same thing be said about your association’s conference/trade show?

Board governance. Cathy A. Trower and Peter D. Eckel at BoardSource say boards need to govern differently now. Yes, we all know that, but they share advice for helping a board adopt a strategic learner’s mindset, choose the right priorities for attention, and adjust meeting formats and committee structures.

Quick hits

  • Timesaving tips, productivity checklists and useful templates from content marketing articles published in the last couple of years. (Jodi Harris, Content Marketing Institute)
  • Spend only one hour a week connecting with new people and your future self will thank you: advice from Dorie Clark about infinite horizon networks and never eating lunch in the office alone. (Darren Menabney, Fast Company)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout.

  • This flounder au gratin recipe is a keeper. I followed the suggestions in the comments and doubled the sauce (so good) and sprinkled Parmesan on top.
  • Another night, pecan-crusted speckled trout. Tis the season for pecans! Since I had it in the frig, I used buttermilk instead of milk. On the side for both nights, greens (collards, radish, carrot tops, pac choi, baby mustard and arugula) sautéed with Portuguese chourico, orange bell pepper, and red and yellow onion. We also had roasted roots (sweet potatoes, potatoes and radishes) with red seedless grapes, rosemary and garlic.

Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link by Wednesday afternoon the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product-centric.
