Association Brain Food: 12.1.23

The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

sunset in the North Carolina mountains – inspiration for my weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

Grassroots advocacy. TopClass LMS explains how education programs can help your association’s grassroots advocacy efforts. When members better understand your association’s legislative and regulatory priorities and their role in achieving those goals, they can more confidently make an effective case with policymakers.

Project success stories. Good things happen when you have good relationships with technology partners. Sherry Budziak of .orgSource recaps accomplishments and lessons learned by the association execs and tech partners who shared their project stories at Solutions Day.

Member recruitment. To attract young members, you must recruit in ways that make sense to them. Impexium recommends proving you’re an organization they can trust, delivering benefits they value, and having processes and systems that facilitate member referrals, new member onboarding, testimonials, social presence, and member feedback.

Content calendars. Trust me, when you don’t know which direction your content is going, the publishing process comes to a halt. Seen it! Hilary Marsh explains the why, what, and how of content calendars and how to choose the best one for your organization.

Gen Z. Rikki Schlott says her generation (Gen Z) has inherited a post-hope world stripped of what matters. All the things that traditionally made life worth living—love, community, country, faith, work, and family—have been “debunked.” She explains what happened to her generation when their social lives moved onto smartphones—depressing but valuable insight for associations.

Conference/abstract management. Ex Ordo describes how to implement conference and abstract management software for medical, technical, scientific, and academic society events. Their guide covers configuring software for abstract submission and peer review, issuing the call for papers, designing the conference program, and more.

LinkedIn. Mark Schaefer explains why you need to ditch LinkedIn as your primary content platform. His points make sense, although he’s not suggesting you stop using LinkedIn.

Off-topic

Noticing a pervasive disregard for the Constitution? That’s on us, says Jay Cost at The Dispatch. From the Electoral College to the Senate, reforms to our founding charters are possible without amendments.

At The Free Press, venture capitalist Katherine Boyle describes how a dynamic vision can win the fight for America, instead of “letting doomsayers, technophobes, and neurotics undermine it from the inside.” I imagine she’s not everyone’s taste, but amidst the depressing news, I find her optimism somewhat refreshing. Plus, she quotes one of my favorites, Alexis de Tocqueville.

Live sunsets around the world, in case you work right through yours.

You never grow old at the table

Two whole black sea bass and two whole perch have been lurking at the bottom of my freezer, so I finally made whole fish with soy and citrus, an Alison Roman recipe I saved long ago. As you’d expect, if you know her work, it was delicious. I cooked the fish on top of the sliced citrus that didn’t fit in the cavities.

From light to heavy, the next night we had cheesy smoked Gruyere chicken. So good. I’d suggest a green veggie on the side, like roasted broccoli with carrot, red onion, garlic powder, and ground New Mexican chile.

It seems weird to report on Thanksgiving dishes more than a week later, but I feel strangely obliged. I made two cranberry sauces—a traditional New England version and a savory chutney. I always adapt the chutney recipe by adding jalapeños, using maple syrup instead of honey and brown sugar instead of sugar, doubling the ginger, and adding orange zest.

Butternut squash and poblano gratin is always a hit at Thanksgiving. But I don’t think I’ll make my from-scratch green bean casserole again. It’s too heavy and, judging by the leftovers, not a big hit, although it’s might tasty if you give it a chance.

    1. Yes, I know, Allison. All my recommendations are curated by me, like you mention, except two. Every week, I feature two resources that require an email address to download as part of my partnership with Lead Marvels. I read these resources before writing the blurb and sharing the link to make sure they’re worthy of inclusion. In full transparency, I make a small royalty if someone downloads them–you can see my disclosure about this at the bottom of each post. Since Association Brain Food takes about five hours a week to put together, the Lead Marvels revenue helps make up for the time I can’t spend on client work. Although it doesn’t come anywhere close to covering it, it’s better than nothing. If you’re tempted by a resource, you can always download it and then unsubscribe to follow-up emails. I know most of these companies, and believe they will not want to bother someone who’s tells them they’re not interested. It’d be bad for their reputation.
