Membership performance survey. ASI invites you to participate in their 7th annual benchmark survey on membership performance. The survey explores how association executives are managing member engagement and retention, achieving operational goals, crafting digital transformation strategies and coping with the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey takes just 5-10 minutes to complete and closes on Friday, November 5—consider it your good deed for the day.

High-performing committees. WBT Systems describes how to establish a high-performing professional development committee. It starts with your association taking a holistic approach to learning, evaluating whether the committee approach is the best strategy, developing committee charges, and rethinking volunteer selection and training.

Virtual meeting practices. Bad habits developed in the office followed associations when they went virtual, which is why Achurch Consulting explains how to adopt a meaningful meeting mindset. Their approach “prevents digital fatigue and protects deep work time while keeping social connections alive and moving projects forward.” Get on board!

Membership strategies. Fíonta consulted the Membership Marketing Benchmarking Report from Marketing General Inc. to identify five membership strategies of high-performing associations. Spoiler: the most successful organizations take full advantage of their technology and data so they can quickly respond to changing member and market needs.

Structured networking. When Amanda Kaiser of Kaiser Insights hosted the Virtual Networking Incubator with Matchbox Virtual Media, 58% of the participants said networking brought up feelings of anxiety and concern. She says you can prevent that by giving attendees something to do. “Creating a structure for every event creates more opportunities for connection than a free-for-all does. Structured activities promote participation, so everyone feels included. And structure creates space for meaningful conversation because attendees have permission to skip the small talk.”

Hybrid, ugh. Lee Gimpel of Better Meetings says you’re not a bad person if you don’t do hybrid. When it comes to hybrid, he says, “It’s important that others in your group understand that they’re asking for 2.5 meetings: one that’s online, one that’s in-person, and then an extra portion that comes from trying to mash them both together.” Seriously, just do in-person first and virtual later.

Digital learning and credentials. Sean Gallagher at EdSurge tells his higher education colleagues that it’s time to reboot their thinking about adult learners in a digitally transformed world. Colleges and universities know they need to change to stay competitive. He talks about “new platforms and providers… in non-institutional or non-traditional contexts… the growing appeal of non-degree credentials, in a world where skills demands are changing at a faster pace than most colleges can keep up with.” The advantage goes to associations here if you can design learning and career pathways, programs, and credentials needed by professionals entering and advancing in your market.

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout.

  • Not much to report because I kept it simple before and upon my return from vacation. Lots of fish on the menu, as usual: maple-barbecue glazed yellowfin tuna, sautéed whole butterfish with lemon butter, and baked striped bass with butter, lemon juice and Aleppo pepper.
  • On the side, we enjoyed roasted broccoli, roasted butternut squash and red onions, and a sauté of greens (pac choi, collards, radish and arugula) with bacon, jalapeño and sweet peppers, onion and carrot.
