The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…
Board strategy. Jeff De Cagna has come up with ten purposeful provocations that every board member and association professional should commit to heart. He advises framing board conversations and decisions with this “new shared point of view on board purpose, composition, structure, and work for the rest of The Turbulent Twenties.”
Jootsing. My new favorite word, it means “jumping out of the system,” not just thinking out of the box, but ignoring the box completely. I think Jeff would like this one. Anne-Laure Le Cunff at Ness Labs writes, “With jootsing, a system’s rules can be used as a starting point to work against… the idea is to start from a seemingly unbreakable rule, and then… to proceed to break it.” Not for the sake of breaking a rule, but to find your way to a better outcome. Sounds delightfully unorthodox to me.
Learning gamification. I’ve always thought exhibit hall games were stupid. Party pooper? Maybe, but I’m not alone. Both Adrian Segar and WBT Systems point out that gamification, when misapplied, doesn’t serve anyone’s goals. WBT suggests motivating and engaging learners by applying the behavioral science principles of gaming, not gamification.
Credentialing programs. MemberSuite explains why the demand is growing for certificate and certification programs and points out the difference between the two. They also describe how credentialing programs can help your association increase member engagement and revenue.
Conference content. Dave Lutz of Velvet Chainsaw Consulting applies the principles of product management to virtual/hybrid conferences and comes up with several ideas for repackaging and rebroadcasting session content that will deliver member value and/or new revenue.
Membership recruitment. I love Marketing General Inc.’s (MGI) annual membership benchmarking report, so I’ve put this new book by Tony Rossell, MGI’s senior vice president, on my list: How to Grow Recurring Revenue, Reach New Markets, and Achieve Your Mission.
Quick hits
- Racial equity statements: eloquent words, but do you mean it? (James Bell III, Event Garde)
- A quick tool for perspective shifts at work. (Jen Dary, One Plucky Blog)
- 19 tips for reading more this year, from people who read a ton in 2020. (Arianna Rebolini, BuzzFeed Books)
Good eats
Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout. If you’re a home cook, check out the weekly In The Kitchen posts on my Grabbing the Gusto blog.
- The highlight of the week was a moussaka recipe from Bon Appétit. To save time, I broiled the eggplant slices instead of roasting them, but the prep still took forever. While enjoying the leftovers, I kept thinking it was worth every minute. I also used ½ teaspoon each of cinnamon and allspice instead of a cinnamon stick, jalapeno instead of a Fresno pepper, cottage instead of farmers cheese, and pureed the tomatoes with an immersion blender before adding them. The results: an incredibly delicious Sunday (and Tuesday) dinner.
- On the side, broccoli rabe sauteed with onions, garlic, red pepper flakes, and tomatoes—lately I’ve been in the mood for these bitter florets, leaves, and stalks.
- Another night we had speckled trout ala mummy Lorraine. For those who aren’t Reids, that’s baked fish with a topping of crushed Ritz crackers, lemon zest, garlic salt, and melted butter.
- On the side, a recipe I will make again: green beans with toasted slivered almonds, accompanied by a roasted sweet potato. Ok, nuked for several minutes than finished in the toaster oven.
- I didn’t have a green veg one night, so I sauteed broccoli stems, carrots, and grape tomatoes, and tossed them with defrosted basil pesto and Parmesan cheese.
Here are the educational events scheduled for next week. If you have a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link before Wednesday evening the week before it’s scheduled. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not too product centric.
