In a recent post, the American Alliance of Museums asks, “Is ‘tax-exempt’ becoming a dirty word?” They point to a series of articles documenting “changing attitudes towards nonprofits in general and museums in particular.” Although the article is written for a museum audience, as 501(c) cousins, associations also need to keep an eye on this issue.

If your technology wish list is long but your budget is short, you have to prioritize your needs. DelCor describes how to develop a technology project portfolio to guide you through these difficult decisions.

We’re one week into the new GDPR-compliant world. Ok, maybe “compliant world” is a stretch. But to help you get there, WBT Systems explains how technology partners should help their association clients comply with GDPR and provides some tips on what you should do on your own end.

Your brain needs you to read every day. A typical Reid-a-book maxim but this time it’s Thomas Oppong at The Startup who’s saying it. He also provides the scientific reasoning behind this common sense advice.

Some quick hits before we get to next week’s free webinars:

  • In December, Google increased the number of allowable characters in SEO meta descriptions, but then they changed their mind. “Google giveth, Google taketh away.” (Moz)
  • How HubSpot uses blogging to rank #1 on Google. (HubSpot)
  • Email is the overlooked backbone of successful content marketing and SEO strategies. (Marketing Land)

Off-topic: Check out my Grabbing the Gusto blog for my post about the list of recipes I’ve made or plan to make in the coming week.

Now, the main event: free professional development events for the association community. If your organization has a free webinar or event coming up, please send me the link. I’ll be happy to feature it as long as it’s not product-centric.

Thu 6/21 at 12 p.m. – DC-Area Partnership Professionals Network Idea Exchange (Washington DC)

It’s happened to many associations. A major corporate sponsor or partner announces at renewal time “we’re outta here”. Or, “your association isn’t in our budget for next year.” What happened? The company had been a supporter for many years and serves many of you members. More importantly, how can you fill this hole of tens of thousands (or hundreds of thousands) of dollars in the revenue budget? Join a discussion on how to help your corporate partners derive value, i.e., how to successfully recruit and retain corporate partners. Location: Washington DC. More info/register.

Host/Organizer: Bruce Rosenthal, founder, Bruce Rosenthal Associates, LLC, and Partnership Professionals Network

That’s it for now. If you can’t attend a live webinar, go ahead and register if the topic interests you. Most webinar hosts send registrants a link to the recording.
