More than 6,000 college admission professionals from around the globe are headed to Ohio’s capital city to network with industry leaders and learn how to better support students and families as they transition from high school to college.

Following a number of preconference workshops and meetings, NACAC16 begins on Thursday afternoon with an opening general session featuring Patricia McGuire, president of Trinity Washington University. She’ll discuss the need for affordable college access and her own path to postsecondary education. Also on the syllabus:

Can’t-miss speakers. In addition to Thursday’s keynote, the conference includes several speakers who are well known in the industry. In the lineup: Jeffrey J. Selingo, contributing writer for The Washington Post; Claudio Sanchez, education correspondent for NPR; and David Coleman, president and CEO of the College Board.

Back to school. While in town, attendees have the opportunity to tour local colleges and experience a little bit of what life is like on campus. Participants gain a better understanding of the institutions’ unique qualities, which they can share with their students when they return to their schools.

Break a sweat. Staying in shape on the road can be tough, but this year, NACAC is offering attendees a Friday morning Zumba class and a 5K run. Entry fees for both events support the Imagine Fund, which provides annual grants to college-counseling professionals.
