Conference Circuit: The NAACP’s Annual Convention

One of the nation's most historic civil rights organizations holds its annual meeting. Plus: events for healthy students and healthy pets.

One of the nation’s most storied civil rights organizations holds its annual meeting. Plus: events supporting healthy students and healthy pets.

The 105th NAACP Annual Convention, with an extensive list of events, speakers, and seminars, begins Saturday, July 19, and runs until July 23. The convention presents an opportunity for civil rights organizers, champions, and other workers to broaden their perspectives, expand their tool sets, and celebrate the history of the United States’ longest-lasting grassroots civil rights organization.

In keeping with the host city, Las Vegas, this year’s convention is themed “All in for Justice and Equality.” Prominent figures like Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and newly elected NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks will speak. A slew of workshops and sessions will cover the roles of youth advisers, how to bring lessons learned during the convention back to the states to aid in local initiatives, and much more. A commerce and industry show will feature corporate, government, and minority exhibitors, and attendees will be able to browse a retail expo to boot.

The Week Ahead

July 13-16: For those looking for a nutritious outlook on student health, physical activity, and more, registrations are still open onsite in Boston for the 68th annual National Conference of the School Nutrition Association. One entertainment highlight: Huey Lewis and the News will perform.

July 14-19: It’s not just experts on student health who will convene in the upcoming week. The Association on Higher Education and Disability will hold a conference in Sacramento, California, in conjunction with pepnet 2, a group dedicated to improving postsecondary education for students who have hearing problems. The conference’s theme this year is “Access Always, in All Ways.”

July 14-17: Why did the chicken cross the country and arrive at Corpus Christi, Texas? To get to the Poultry Science Association’s annual meeting. Topics of discussion range from “The Role of the Poultry Industry in Feeding the World in 2050” to “10th Anniversary of the Chicken Genome Sequence.”

Down the Line

July 25-29: Americans are projected to spend more than $58 billion on their pets this year alone, so they’ll be glad to know that veterinarians can keep their knowledge up to date by attending the American Veterinary Medical Association annual conference later this month. The proceedings in Denver will feature sessions on everything from ovariectomies vs. ovariohysterectomies to animal hospice care.
