Alert: PPP Expansion is in Jeopardy

[reprinted from ASAE Public Policy message – sign up for their Advocacy Alerts]

Dear Members and Advocates:

We write you today with a highly urgent message as Congress seeks to finalize the latest pandemic relief package by the end of the weekend. Amid 11th hour negotiations, we need your support to secure the expansion of the Paycheck Protection Program to 501(c)(6) nonprofit associations. Financial assistance to associations has been a consistent theme across nearly all of the relief packages that have been voted on in the House and Senate, and yet we are still not across the finish line. While there is broad, bipartisan, bicameral support for expanding PPP to nonprofit associations, Congressional Leaders are negotiating behind closed doors now and horse-trading in the Capitol could mean associations are at risk of once again being locked out of the PPP.

Engage Congress Now – Help Us Secure PPP Expansion to 501(c)(6)s

If you have relationships in Congress, we urge you to weigh in today. Even more critical, please contact Congressional Leadership immediately, if possible: Speaker Pelosi (D-Calif.), House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.)

You can also write your legislators with our grassroots portal message. It’s ready-to-go and doesn’t require edits. That said, you’re welcome to personalize if you wish. Data specific to your organization, constituencies, members, etc., are especially important.

What’s Next

Negotiations in Congress will continue over the weekend. Your hard work to tell your story and change the narrative has been so vital for our efforts. And, while the outcome is uncertain at this time, our collective efforts this year have without question given Congress a deeper education on what associations do, who we represent and why we desperately need relief.

Social Media

If you have a few more minutes to spare this weekend, we also ask you to write your legislators on social media. Below is a sample Tweet to the House and Senate leadership, and you can also use our list of congressional social media accounts to write to others.

Associations are devastated but remain locked out of essential relief. @senatemajldr, @SenSchumer, @SpeakerPelosi, @GOPLeader, we urge you to include nonprofit associations and other 501c6 organizations in the PPP #powerofa @ASAEcenter @power_of_a

Thank you again for your work, which has made our progress this year possible.  Please email me if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Mary Kate Cunningham, CAE
Senior Vice President of Public Policy
