Conference Circuit: Web Ed

The HighEdWeb 2016 Annual Conference begins Sunday night in Memphis, Tennessee.

Web developers, marketers, and programmers—along with managers, designers, writers, and all team members in between—are headed to Memphis this weekend to explore and learn more about the unique web issues facing colleges and universities.

Association:  Higher Education Web Professionals Association

Conference: HighEdWeb 2016 Annual Conference

Venue: Memphis Cook Convention Center

City: Memphis, Tennessee

Following a welcome reception on Sunday evening, HighEdWeb 2016 kicks off on Monday morning with a series of education sessions followed by an afternoon keynote featuring Kimberly Bryant. The Aspen Institute Fellow and founder of Black Girls CODE will discuss her vision for the future of the industry. Also on the program:

All are welcome. To ensure that attendees feel safe, the meeting has a code of conduct posted online. “The HighEdWeb community is awesome. And we want it to keep on being awesome for everyone,” it says. “As we look forward to a great conference, we want to remind everyone of what we know you already know: HighEdWeb is dedicated to working toward a harassment-free community and conference experience for everyone …”

Take me out to the ballgame. On Tuesday evening, attendees will head to local ballfield— AutoZone Park!—for the HighEdWeb Big Social Event. They’ll get the chance to network with colleagues while eating ballpark food, listening to live soul and blues music, taking a swing in the batting cages, and participating in a corn hole tournament.

Over the rainbow. Actor, director, and educator LeVar Burton—probably best known as host of the children’s series Reading Rainbow—will be the conference’s closing keynote speaker. Burton, who reinvented Reading Rainbow as a digital reading service and app, will discuss how he is bringing the service to classrooms in need and what went into launching the most successful Kickstarter campaign ever.

The usual social spaces—Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (#heweb16)—will give you any other conference details you may be looking for.
