The weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community…

a spot of sunlight on the trail through the autumn woods – inspiration for a weekly list of free educational events and resources for the association community

I’m on vacation next week—hiking in the Santa Fe area of New Mexico—so this Brain Food covers all the events I could find (and that came my way) for the next two weeks. See you back here on Friday, October 15.

Women in technology. If you are (or someone you know is) a woman who has made (and continues to make) amazing contributions to the advancement of technology in associations, Association Women Technology Champions (AWTC) invites you to apply (or to encourage someone else to apply) for the AWTC Technology Leadership Award or the AWTC Technology Champion Award. Please don’t dawdle because the deadline for applications is Monday, October 11 and “applications require some thought, a resume, and letters of recommendation.”

Future of the association workplace. Achurch Consulting and Association TRENDS just released a must-read report, State of Association Workplaces Post-Pandemic Survey, that answers the question: “How will the acceleration of remote work impact the association workplace?” Not only does the report present the findings of a survey of over 350 association leaders, but it also shares insights that will help associations “design an intentional workplace that is dynamic, flexible, and productive well into the future.”

Why get an LMS. Your association survived the pandemic without an LMS, you’re returning to in-person meetings, and the budget isn’t looking so good. Why the heck would you even think about getting an LMS? Well, WBT Systems shares several excellent reasons, including ways to get more value (ahem, ROI) out of an LMS that may surprise you—it’s not just for online courses.

Chapter-in-a-box solution. Sharing data and dollars between chapters and associations can be a nightmare for both sides. Busy volunteer leaders don’t always have the time or skills to master data and financial management and, besides, they should focus on more strategic concerns. Billhighway explains how technology can automate these tasks, providing the guardrails needed for sound chapter financial management and giving your association the data you need to understand the true value of chapters.

Disrupted by Delta. With the future looking uncertain because of the Delta variant, MemberSuite suggests calling on your powers of foresight and flexibility when planning conferences. Provide peace of mind to in-person attendees by using technology to enforce event entry requirements, don’t settle for the pre-pandemic in-person conference experience, and always have a Plan B virtual conference option.

Virtual conference coffee breaks. “At a conference the most important things happen in the coffee break,” said the guy who once hosted a non-conference that included everything but the sessions. Eva Amsen makes an excellent argument for why coffee breaks are essential at virtual conferences, although they’re usually not part of the program. Keep her advice in mind as you’re planning in-person conferences too.

Group think run amok. In his post, “We See As We Be,” Jamie Wheal has an interesting take on a disturbing issue. He says, “In the past few months, my social network has lurched sideways several extra clicks into conspiracy land”—and he’s not just talking about Flat-Earthers. His beef is with group think too—a political equal-opportunity phenomenon, if you ask me. He identifies “four main Ego Stories that seem to be especially prevalent these days in informing who gets suckered into which particular conspiracy.”

Quick hits

  • After recently planning and facilitating several in-person meetings and events for a variety of clients and industries, Aaron Wolowiec, CAE, shares 11 observations for keeping members and attendees safe and comfortable. (Event Garde)
  • Five game changers for association success in 2022. I’ve never seen #1 on a list like this before. (360LiveMedia)
  • Let’s not start with your “why.” Contrarian marketing common sense. (Mark Schaefer)
  • New cybercrime tactic: shortened LinkedIn URLs are now used as phish hooks. (Stu Sjouwerman, KnowBe4)

Good eats

Skip down to the list of free webinars if you prefer takeout.

  • Grab a bag of your favorite snack for potato chip flounder—our choice was Kettle jalapeno chips. On the side, shredded Brussels sprouts roasted with red onion, bacon and garlic, then drizzled with a mix of balsamic vinegar and honey (1 tbsp:1 tsp) with a heavy dash of ancho chile powder.
  • Sunday, we splurged on shrimp-stuffed flounder. My original Emeril recipe is no longer online, but I found this one, which is pretty much the same. I used a pound of shrimp instead of a half-pound of crabmeat, so I doubled the ‘stuffing’ ingredients. I didn’t roll the fillets per the recipe, instead I used the method he suggested in the original recipe: cut a few fillets in half lengthwise—so each half fillet is ready to top a whole fillet, cover the whole fillets with the shrimp stuffing and then cover one side of the stuffing with the half-fillet.
  • On the side, a mix of greens (radish, kale, collards and pac choi) sauteed with onion, bacon, orange bell, poblano and garlic and drizzled at the end with a maple-sherry vinegar mix.
  • Prepping for a busy week, I also made parmesan garlic edamame, and roasted butternut squash with smoked paprika, cinnamon, garlic powder and cayenne, and tossed with fresh sage at the end.
