Participants staying in hotels far afield from one another aren’t likely to interact outside of the conference. Connolly’s group, for example, worked with the Boys & Girls Club of Indianapolis to build bicycles for 320 local children.

The $400 million project would include amenities such as meeting space and a restaurant. In particular, the city is seeing a growing threat from nearby Indianapolis, which has had success with midsize events.
