Just ask New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Between 2000 and 2010, the city’s MetroCard system was an unexpected profit center for the city, as passengers let $500 million in prepaid fares expire, according to The New York Times. Expired card value does benefit the MTA.
