While technology groups tout the benefits of map apps, auto-safety organizations say cellphone use on the road is dangerous—no matter the function. As of June 2014, 44 states and the District of Columbia have banned text-messaging while driving, and 13 states plus D.C. prohibit handheld cellphone use.
