An online Coursera course, Modern American Poetry , aka ModPo, is one of the 50 most popular MOOCs of all time. Typically, a MOOC features a course syllabus, in this case, a ten-week lesson plan with assigned reading (poems), instructor-created video content, discussion forum, peer-reviewed writing assignments, and quizzes.

In fact, I took my first graduate class as a lifelong learner because it was so much cheaper. For example, if an association offers online certification, it can easily incorporate a YouTube video or podcast. If you know of an expert on MOOCs, or if your association uses MOOCs, please contact me. Crowdsourcing is also key.

MOOCs: We will go against the grain a bit here and argue that MOOCs AREN’T DEAD. All the MOOCs out there. And all the quasi-MOOCs in higher education and CE: the cheap online master’s degrees that seemingly every big-name university is now offering. Plateau of Productivity. Our evidence?

If you’ve taken a continuing education class, you’ve seen how students fade away over time. They have trouble making class and keeping up with coursework. Take them on a guided video tour through your LMS, pointing out the different features and functionality, including the online community. People get busy.

For many adults, taking a class online is a new learning experience. Engage learners’ brains by using a mix of content delivery methods—video, text, audio, and presentations. Don’t be afraid to use video. For example, at an ASAE conference, several members presented a video that illustrated a common problem for IT directors.
