neighborhood started its Little Free Library with books as “food” for the mind. Homeowner Jessica Bell founded and maintained the library in Briarwood Homeowners Association, a community of 202 single-family homes, by regularly stocking it with books. A Charlottesville, Va., Now, it’s a little food pantry for the body.

Just a few more examples to add to the two above: The Society for Neuroscience “ grants about 70 awards each year , worth more than $100,000 total, assisting students, postdoctoral fellows, international delegates, and even science-journalism students” to attend its conferences. Funding for those awards comes from SfN donors.
