Since last week’s blog post, the latest story about Detroit’s bankruptcy seems to be the city’s problem with stray dogs. I’m not sure this is news, but as Larry Alexander, president of the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau , told me last week, media watch the city with careful eyes since it’s the automobile capital of the world. The city’s convention and visitors bureau announced hotel and convention bookings are up significantly for the next two years—the result of a hard-fought effort to elevate Detroit’s image. We had to work extremely hard to convince customers that Detroit is operating and is suitable for major conventions. Detroit may be dealing with bankruptcy , but you wouldn’t know it by looking at its convention and hotel room bookings for the next couple of years.

Marketing is much more difficult than most people think. It requires creativity, strategic planning, vision and data analysis. Fix MI State Campaign Takes Aim at Infrastructure Issues

Over the past seven months, the association, which represents more than 600 companies in the construction industry, has built up a massive public awareness initiative set to consume up to 20 percent of its annual budget, according to an article in Crain’s Detroit Business. NBA Players, Nonprofit Encourage Healthy Eating in Flint

The National Basketball Players Association and the FlintNOW Foundation, a nonprofit founded by Detroit Pistons Owner Tom Gores, partnered with the Michigan State University and Hurley Children’s Hospital on their Pediatric Public Health Initiative to distribute 8,000 “nutrition backpacks” to elementary school children at Flint public schools on June 6. If the backpack program is successful, the organization would consider repeating it in the fall, according to Crain’s Detroit Business.
