'image source Last week I wrote about a facilitation workshop I recently attended--a workshop to learn how to be a better facilitator and how to teach others to do the same. I got a lot of takeaways that are relevant to the work I and my staff do with our association''s Board, committees, and task forces. Here''s another. When facilitating a meeting of association members, think about what “ice” needs to be broken.

'Note from Beth: Last week I was in New Orleans for the National Assembly of State Arts Councils meeting. I facilitated a peer session with Public Information Officers and a Mini-Workshop on managing and measuring a social media presence. 'By Virgil R. Carter Despite the great diversity among non-profit organizations, we all seek effective governance by our boards. 'In a bold (but not unheard-of) strategy, the animal rights group recently launched its own “animal utopia” on Minecraft. The game server includes a full re-creation of PETA’s headquarters. The staff of Associations Now can guarantee that no animals were harmed in the making of this virtual office. And People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) wouldn’t have it any other way.

Several years ago, I was sitting in a fundraising meeting agonizing about our year-end mailer. The direct mail piece targeted our older, wealthy donors – and if we didn’t hit the lofty goal we’d set, we wouldn’t have enough time to recover. 'An Indie Agreement Months after YouTube found itself in a public spat with numerous indie labels over royalties, the two sides appear to have made peace. Last week, You Tube reportedly made a deal with Merlin , the trade-group-run distribution service that manages the rights for thousands of indie labels. It came just in time, apparently—days later, YouTube’s Music Key subscription service, which will compete with stalwarts like Spotify, finally made its debut.

'Is the volunteer talking about his personal needs being selfish—or sending you a message about how your organization can change? “What’s in it for me?” Few profanity-free lines could be more offensive in a gathering of association volunteers and staffers. Those people—and sometimes even members—are trained to understand that they’re all participating in the organization in the name of a greater good.
