One of the questions I get asked a lot is: “How much should I be willing to invest to recruit a member?” The answer is not obvious. For example, let’s say you invest $1000 on a recruitment campaign and bring in five new members. That means you spent $200 each to acquire those members. (Don’t get distracted by: “But I contacted 100 people, so I only spent $10 per person.” No, you didn’t. 95 of those people didn’t join.).

I used to blog a lot about innovation in the association environment. I used to think a lot about the subject, I helped write a white paper on the subject, helped launch a regional conference focused on it, and have tried to move my association on to a more innovative footing. All that attention and all those experiments were reflected in the posts put up on this blog.

Traditional budgeting and forecasting methods can no longer keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Static budgets, rigid annual forecasts, and outdated financial models limit an organization’s ability to adapt to market shifts and economic uncertainty. To stay ahead, finance leaders must leverage a future-forward approach—one that leverages real-time data, predictive analytics, and continuous planning to drive smarter financial decisions.

Heat and A/C – even if it’s never the right temperature. Small wins – being able to check something simple off a to-do list. Cool coworkers – how awful would it be without them? Fresh coffee – or any coffee, really.

Every association has a unique way of working to make their members lives easier, and membership structures are the foundation upon which associations work. The question of how to build the best membership structure for an association can be daunting, as it suggests an overhaul of how we do things from the ground up.
