Anyone can be thankful but expressing the thanks in a meaningful way (to the recipient) is an art. In this case I’m not talking about the medium, I’m referring to the message.

Teams Reflect Their Leaders

Association Leaders

We often discuss in this blog that companies are like teams. Successful teams have strategic and inspiring coaching; efficient and hard-working playing and outrageous fans. I submit to you that companies have those same traits – strategic and inspiring CEOs; efficient and hard-working employees; and outrageous customers. (At least we hope our customers are outrageous about the products and services we deliver them).

Association Management Lessons from Twinkpocalypse 2012

Association Subculture

I knew there would be a number of tribute videos on YouTube for the Twinkie. I just knew it. Say what you want about the Generation X alarm about the possible demise of Hostess but you can't deny it's impact on the pop culture consciousness over the past 72 hours. I could tip my hat to the Twinkie, but I was much more devoted to the Ding Dong, the Ho-Ho and, can we talk, the Hostess fruit pie (I can see the sugar glaze on it now in my minds eye).

What Is Cost to Serve?

Thanks For Playing

And why does it matter? Every membership organization faces this sooner or later, and the answer, while simple, is not easy. At its most basic level: Revenue per member – Expenses per member = Cost to serve a member Simple, right? "If membership is $100 a year, and it costs us $60 a year to mail each member our journal, that's our cost to serve, and we bring in $40 a year in revenue per member.

Too Big to Measure

Eric Lanke

image source This is a true story. My association Board chair and I were chatting not long ago, talking about the mission and big-picture objectives of our association, and I mentioned, literally without giving it a second thought, that we were incapable of measuring progress on some of the things we had set for ourselves. It was only the look of shock that passed over his face that made me step back and think about what I had just said.

Why Management Doesn’t Change

Jamie Notter

Today I noticed a post on HBR from Eric Schmidt , the CEO of Google. He said that there was one HBR article–from 12 years ago no less–that still guides Google as they grow and develop today. Obviously, this is an article I need to read. Actually, I was kind of hoping I’d already read it, but back in 2000 I was recently out of the conflict resolution field and doing diversity training, so I wasn’t yet reading HBR (shame on me!).

Taking It In Without Taking It On

Having just recently spoken in that city of cities, Las Vegas, I can now assert with great authority that the mystique of the place is just lost on me. I am not simply referring to the fact that I don’t gamble. Las Vegas became far more than a gambling joint many years ago. And my self-assessment is not the result of a lack of effort on my part. During this most recent trip I committed myself to trying to appreciate Vegas and all its trappings the same way friends and colleagues seem to relish i

In Celebration Of Your Generosity

Velvet Chainsaw

I’ve been traveling a lot this month. And that’s an understatement! I think I’ve been in the air more than I’ve been in my own home. Air travel is usually such an inconvenience. It takes a lot of energy, time and patience to navigate the check-in process, TSA security and then get to the proper gate. Then you have to get on the plane, store your carry-on and try to get comfortable in a cramped chair.

The Fire Has to Be Stoked

Idea Architects

I'm on a brief writing sabbatical in the mountains of Utah. My previous condos have all featured a gas fireplace. Just flip the switch and you have instant and constant flames. This year's unit has a wood fireplace, so building a fire involved setting some kindling aflame, adding wood, periodically stoking the logs to keep the flames going, and regularly adding more wood.

The Big 3 (Costs, changing demographics and mobile) impacting association meetings

SCD Group

Like many of you, I belong to a national association that normally charges about $800 for its 3-day national meeting. But, the registration fee is less than 20% of the total cost of attending. In addition, I have to pay airfare/travel costs (around $500) and lodging expenses (about $950). So, my out-of-pocket costs total about $2,250. Since I’m self-employed, I need to look at potential lost income from being away from my work.
