HIGHER LOGIC CARES: Through our 2019 Charity Program, we sent a group of nine staff volunteers to Houston, Texas, in May 2019 to assist Team Rubicon in disaster response efforts. In fact, the Houston home we worked on was scheduled to take at least one week to clear out and perform demolition—we did it in two days. Who is Team Rubicon?

For TSAE, holding its annual conference in Houston after Harvey was a way to show support and solidarity with their members and friends in the area. However, the message from Visit Houston and other city hospitality leaders throughout the three days was clear: Houston is back in business and stronger than ever.

Here’s a prime example: Last year, an overwhelmed manager of a large master-planned community was on the verge of quitting her job due to a precarious situation involving a resident with mental health issues. Sometimes, community conflict is unavoidable and associations must take action to avoid liability while honoring its obligations.

The response reflects the help that Hurricane Katrina victims received from Houston more than a decade ago. When Hurricane Harvey hit Houston and other parts of southeast Texas , Louisiana’s restaurant industry knew all about how bad a storm like this could be. Some have already taken things into their own hands.

My social media feeds were full of examples of associations pitching in to help storm victims or otherwise changing their marketing and communications strategy to give members in the hurricane affected areas a break from what otherwise must be an onslaught of association messages. My association, however, didn't do any of these things.

A great example of this: During the “Mad Men” era of the 1950s and 1960s, many newspaper comics (among them, Beetle Bailey , Hagar the Horrible , and Nancy ) were made in the same region of Connecticut , in part due to its fairly close proximity to the syndicates that published and distributed the comics.

When I worked for Naylor I was based in Florida, but eventually I wanted to return to Houston. While I wasn’t necessarily looking to work at an association, through the PRSA Houston Chapter job board, I found a posting for an editorial manager role with IFMA.
