This month, we asked readers what their most valuable sources of non-dues revenue are. However, we were surprised to see that no one reported valuing advertising in publications as a solid source of non-dues revenue. Both challenges have increased since 2011, with 69 percent and 67 percent of associations stating those are the largest obstacles. Also of note: More than half of respondents recognize a serious or significant problem with the lack of revenue generated from their communication vehicles.

Only 1 in 5 associations say they have a good understanding of reader, member and advertiser needs, and associations are experimenting with bringing back traditional communication channels such as printed newsletters while investing more resources and effort in newer platforms like podcasts and apps.

If youre familiar with Sernovitz, either from Damn, I Wish Id Thought of That or his WOM newsletter, the book is not going to be revolutionary. WOM generates more revenue (not least of which because it doesnt generate much in the way of costs). ► 2011. I think the key chapter is "Six Big Ideas" (chapter 2). The Mom Test.

As the District reviews its tax code and seeks higher revenue, a new tax on nongovernmental employers is being considered. It could affect the bottom lines of all DC-based associations. In other cities with similar tax policies , the cost is typically passed on to the employee as a payroll deduction.
