Subject matter experts (SMEs) have the potential to be the most versatile and impactful members of your community. But are you enabling them to make an impact and, more importantly, do you know what obstacles they are facing within the community and your organization? We often find that online communities are unintentionally set up with roadblocks that make it harder for subject matter experts to participate.

As a first-timer attending the ASAE Annual Meeting & Expo, where thousands of association leaders, staff and industry partners gather to share strategies, resources, solutions and successes, I was—in a word—amazed. I was amazed for a variety of reasons. First, the weather in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, was pleasant and comfortable compared to the dog days.

A good friend of mine recently returned to the 9-to-5 office world after several years of freelancing while her kids were small, and she asked me if I had any advice about being a better boss, since she’s managing a team for the first time in several years. And with Labor Day fast approaching, and having recently had the pleasure of a delightful lunch with the woman who taught me much of this, now seemed a good time to share what I learned from my first, best boss in my association career.

Including diverse voices and faces is so important for the success of your organization, as well as for society at large. “I was both surprised and pleased to learn that the ratio of women leaders in the nonprofit sector is much less out-of-balance than expected. There is an opportunity cost associated with everything. When I am here, I cannot be there. When I am thinking about this, I cannot think about that. When I am doing that, I cannot do this. In our associations, we are always living with the consequences of opportunity cost. The missed opportunity can cost us money or time and more intangible things like the ability to carve out space to think, a new relationship, or a good idea.

I watched the news reports from Texas and was horrified at the scale of this disaster. I grew up on the Jersey shore where I’ve been evacuated due to storms, but I have never seen this level of disaster. My heart goes out to the victims and I want to help. When a natural disaster strikes, I make a donation to my go to national or global charities for disaster relief Team Rubicon, Save the Children , and/or Global Giving.

Have you ever noticed that when you buy a car, there are suddenly more cars just like yours on the road? Maybe it is just me, but I see a lot of navy Subaru Legacy’s out there right now. I know I did not see that many five years ago. I may think people like me must be buying more cars just like mine, but that is probably not true. Sometimes our pattern seeking brains falsely see patterns and erroneously place too much importance on them.

Nurturing volunteers is important not only to the success of an association but for the personal and professional fulfillment of those volunteers.

Associations are notable for encouraging multitasking. But without close attention, all those tasks can drain workers. People talk about “wearing many hats” so often in the association world that you’d be forgiven if you sometimes think you’re in the haberdashery business. The many-hats conceit is often discussed with a smirk, or as a point of pride, especially in small-staff organizations—Monday I’m an events coordinator, Tuesday I’m a publisher, Wednesday I’m in credentialing, and so on.

How some associations are being bold with their marketing campaigns - and why it's working. People love to be surprised. When our familiar contexts are re-arranged, or we are met by the unexpected, we are provoked into feeling something new and unanticipated. We also love to be entertained – to let our minds be diverted – and stimulating someone’s emotions and feelings often leaves more of a mark than targeting their more rational, intellectual responses.

A sense of ownership is crucial for members to feel comfortable engaging with each other. How do we foster it? Members need to trust that their community is a safe space to participate - whether they’re providing positive or negative feedback to their peers. Never allow members to attack someone for sharing their thoughts, and take time to consider whether or not to allow anonymity in posting or reporting content on your community.
