Interestingly, in one of our smaller associations, we inaugurated a robust DEI committee and program, and increased the number of volunteers engaged in our programs and running for the board. Meanwhile, the traditional volunteer board and committees inherently slow down decision-making processes. But wait, not all responding said yes.

That’s a decline of 14 percentage points from the 2017 report. One of the sacred cows for associations and their annual conference is attributing notoriety to the office of the president, board chair or annual conference committee chair. Conferences are for the profession — not the elite leadership. Embrace Servant Leadership.

Change Leadership. In October 2017, I co-presented a session, “Leading Change,” at ASCE’s Annual Convention based on John Kotter’s 8-Step Process for Leading Change. One of the concerns we had about the process was members resisting it based on a fear of some committees being eliminated as a result. Change Readiness.
